Pike I have heard comes from the Turnpike roads, and name Pikey was then given to Travellers/Vagrants. As they would no doubt having to talk there way through many Turn pikes,,

The difference between a Traveller and Gypsies was that: the Gypsies often moved as a community. Where as the Travellers/ Vagrants travelled alone, Quite often there behaviour was quite anti-social, and the word Pikey came to have derogatory connotations.

Any way, When used to refer to Irish Gypsies, it can be taken as being almost racist, although I think an Irishman had better explain that to you. Besides it best you don´t use it at all.

Gypsies and Pikeys are completely seperate things

Gypsies are decended from the Romanie Gypsies and are Honorable and hard working and bring great benifit to the local area where they are residing, Gypsies used to travel the country trading horses and performing handyman tasks to a high level of compenency, (not like some cowboys).

Pikeys are the ones you see setting fire to cars and fallling about drunk on the streets. (nuff said)

Im with Bluegreen - thats how it was in my area anyway. Pikeys are like wanna-be gypsies, but they are just violent and horrible and give real gypsies a bad name.

Gypsies roam the countryside carrying out small jobs for legitimate payment.
Pikeys set up their own camps, without planning permission, park on double yellow lines, cause fights, don't pay taxes......... etc etc
Get the drift?
