If you live near an IKEA I suggest them. Try concentrating on the necessary pieces, then adding more. Don't rush into filling the entire apartment at once or you will end up having things you don't want or a place that looks like trash.

I definitely add my vote to those who suggested IKEA. They have modern furniture at VERY cheap prices. I got my coffee table there for $40, and the end tables were $15 each. Sofas run in the low hundreds, and you can get GREAT deals on accessories. Another tip is to check the scratch and dent section - I have found items there that aren't really damaged at all for 75-80% off the original price. The store is amazing.

I would also recommend IKEA!! I know that in the Sacramento area there are stores that sell furniture that was used in staging homes or apartments that were for sale or rent. I have heard they have good prices and the items are like new. Maybe there is a place like that in your area.

Sam's Club/BJ's/Costco all have pretty good furniture and it's fairly cheap. Also, Target has some nice things. Roomstore is also good if you're on a budget, and there's a Scratch and Dent chain (depending on where you are) that sells furniture that has a few flaws, but they usually aren't even noticable.
Good luck!

classified section should be a jackpot at this time of year..since a lot of folks are getting rid of old stuff to buy new ones. also check out ebay....and like evryone says the garage and yard sales can come up with a wealth of things at a fraction of the cost
