This is a male kitten; am I better off with a female or male companion for him?

I would suggest that you do get another kitten. It would make the transition of both cats getting used to each other much easier. I have been told that if you already have a male kitten, you are better off getting a female so there isn't constant fighting to be the "alpha" cat. Also, there may be some spraying too if the cats are not fixed. I had more than one male cat in my home and had tons of problems even though they were raised together from kittens. Good luck and hope it all works out for you!

Personally, whatever you fall in love with would be a good companion. If you get an older cat it will take a few days but they will be great friends...and if you get a kitten after a few days they too would be friends. You just have to be sure that both are healthy and slowly introduce them to each other and if they show any signs of aggression separate them and try introducing them even slower.

As long a cat/kitten is neutered/spayed their sex doesn't matter. Some say that a neutered male is more loving...other say the same about a spayed female. I think it is just the personality of each cat as to whether or not they are loving and also by the breed.

I would suggesting going to a shelter and visiting with several cats and kittens and see if you can find one with a simular personality to the kitten you already have.

Maybe you want a matched set.

It's completely up to you because no matter what your 12 week old kitten will adapt to whatever decision you make.

Enjoy this time in your kitten's life! They're so fun at that age!

Good luck!

You're better off getting another kitten - they will bond easier. Sex won't matter a lot if they are kittens. But make sure someone or both gets 'fixed' before adulthood, if they are opposite!!

Also, be prepared for some fighting- hissing and growling. They - as kittens - won't hurt each other - let them work it out. Most likely it won't last and they will start playing.

Two males will fight more, until they are neutered. A male and female are less likely to fight - but you don't want accidental pregnancy as they grow! Two females might be best.

I think it's always a good idea to have 2 cats rather than one. Even if cats don't like to play together, they appreciate some cat company around the house. There is nothing cuter than watching two kittens play! Just guard your Christmas tree! LOL

Get another kitten so they can grow up together.

Kittens are naturally friendly and will try to play with and love everyone they come into contact with.

Unfortunately, not all adult cats appreciate this.

Please look at the number of questions about "How do I get my cats to like each other" or "How do I keep my cats from fighting" to see this truth in action.

There will be less fighting and dominance issues if the kittens grow up together.

If you have a male kitten get a female companion kitten for him. Most males accept female companions better.

If you get two dominant males you run the risk that they will always fight with each other.

I would say either an adult or kitten. When I got my first kitten this year, I waited about a month or 2 then got another kitten and my first one hated it for about a week or two. now there best friends (both female). then 2 weeks ago we got and adult fixed male cat, the kittens and him didnt like each other at first, but there are starting to get along now. so whatever you get a kitten or adult, i think the one you had first is gonna be kinda angry at first. and I would get a male unless one of them is fixed

You are definately better off with another male. They get along better. You should get a kitten. Adult cats are set in their ways and may not want to deal with a kitten. If you get another kitten your first will have someone to play with.

A female kitten would be great. Young kittens are not readily available right now and I am sure there are many under a year old that you could adopt. Go to your local animal shelter or humane society or call to see what is available in that "under one year" age bracket.

which ever you prefer, an adult cat will get used to a kitten. just remember when you chose the sex you want, when the kitten gets older, it will mate with the other cat, you will have a batch of kittens.

either male of female but make sure they are both fixed! I would suggest you get another kitten, makes it an easire task to get them aquainted...plus they will both have lots of energy to burn with each other. if u get an adult cat it may not want to play with the little one, and may even get very aggitated by it
