Having a job to do and some who loves them for doing their jobs.
Some who will provide a good home and good health care for them. Someone who will take the time to train and play with them and make sure they are healthy and well cared for.

What makes my dog happiest is when he accomplishes something that makes my mom happy. Teach him some tricks, and go crazy-nuts with joy when he gets something right, and he'll feel great knowing he's doing good for his pack.

Food, shelter, chewing, and a good pack leader.

My dog has refined this to mean lamb/rice food, the doggie bed next to my side of the people bed, his squeaky rabbit, and me (preferably scratching his belly).

Food, love, not being neglected. Knowing that you will take care of them and love them even when they destroy things in your house.
Sleeping in between you and your significant other makes them happy too!
