iTunes question??

Whenever I download music off of the internet and then go to put it into iTunes, it will make 2 copies of each song. It's okay when I look at iTunes, but when I actually go into the iTunes music folder, there will be two copies of each song, and I will have to manually remove the copy. Is there something i need to adjust in preferences?
