We can't afford the cost of travel right now. Also, my husband started his new job this week! We will be going without a paycheck for a month as it is. This is not the kind of family that floats a loan. We don't want to hurt any one! We feel so sad but are in a bind.

Just be honest, and tell them. We were unable to attend my grandfather's funeral a couple years ago due to similar circumstances.

Although it did not make up for our absence, we sent a beautiful flower arrangement and a card to my grandmother, and she said it made her day to see that we were thinking of her and the rest of the family even though we could not come.

You explain it just as is. You seem to have a legitimate excuse and quite frankly, if you saw the grandfather when he was alive isn't that what matters anyway?
If the other family members can't understand your reasoning behind it then to hell with 'em. They're not the type of family I'd care to be connected with.
So just lay it out as is. After all...in the longrun, life is for the living.

Just let them know your situation and that it is impossible for you to attend at this time. Then tell them that when it is possible for him to take the time off from his new job, that you will make a trip out there to pay your respects. They should be understanding.

If they say anything, just say that your husband already spoke with his boss and that it was 'recommended' that he not go.

Send a card or email & be honest. Let them know you are sad, & loved him & them & I think they will understand. Things can happen at the most awkward time. This has happened to me recently. My beloved sister & for health reasons I could not travel. They did understand.
