Why do you want to install XP Home instead of XP Professional? Its actually a downgrade - not an upgrade, which is why you get that message.

If you MUST replace XP Professional by XP Home - you will need to format your PC. Get a bootable XP Home CD (yours might already be) -to check if your XP Home CD is bootable or not and to install XP Home do the following:

1. Take the backup of all your data on your PC, because installation of Home would require a FORMAT of your PC and all the data would be gone.
2. Place the CD in the Drive and restart the PC.
3. When the PC boots up, you will get a prompt to boot from the CD (if the CD is bootable).
4. Choose to boot from the CD - and you will get option to format the PC and thereafter install Home.

HTH.

Going from XP Pro to XP Home isn't an upgrade, it is a downgrade which is why you can't do it. You would need to format your entire PC to get windows XP Home on it.

Just a bit of warning. If you have an XP Home upgrade CD you will not be able to install a whole new OS without some kinda of older windows version CD to conferm that you have a older version. Without it you cannot have a new installation with a upgrade CD.

Stay with the XP Professional Version. It is much better than the Home version. Sell the home version CD to someone who doesn't have win xp.

You can't downgrade within the OS from Professional to Home. You must reboot from cd, delete your partition, format hard drive and run install. Make sure you backup all your files on a cd/dvd or external drive.

why would you want to go from professional to home edition? professional offers many more options than the home edition.

I would stick with the professional edition and upgrade it through windows update.
