I went to pick up my boyfriend's 12yo daughter from her dance class a few weeks ago, and one mom there was going through the catalogues of dance costumes with her daughter, telling her "Y'all should get this one because it's sexy."
The 12yo gets dressed in dance costumes better suited to a so-called gentleman's club, with tons of make-up. When off-stage, she wears shorts that barely cover her underwear (probably don't if she bends or stretches), bikinis, strapless belly-baring tops, and shirts with suggestive sayings.
What is wrong with moms?
They think since they can't get away with wearing that stuff anymore they have to live vicariously and dress their kids in it?
And, how do we stop it? Specifically, how can I intervene for this 12yo who I actually have no jurisdiction over?

SMM- Yes! This child is upset because the school will not allow her to attend while wearing ANY of the shorts or skirts she owns- none of them reach the 6-inches-above-the-knee-or-lower requirement. She wears heels I would not try to walk in; ones I wouldn't add to a Halloween costume if I was going as a prostitute.

I think it is scary how the young girls dress they look like street walkers instead of little girls ,I have all sons 4 to be exact and my oldest is 14 and i have even caught him saying things like my gosh did you see how she was dressed she looked like a hooker I try to tell him that is not nice to say but in the back of my mind i am really thinking the same thing .I wish there was something we could do to teach these girls not to dress this way but as long as other parents are letting there daughters dress this way what are we to do ?

I think its unfair on the child. The can't even run around and play properly because they're so dressed up. I've seen little 4 year olds on high heels. What kind of damage is that going to cause in later life!

It IS strange isn't it. The same mums of course are the ones that freak out at the idea of a paedophile livnig within 10 miles of the house - but then tries to make thie underage daughter look like she is older/sexier/more mature than she is. It really is quite bizarre.
I guess as you say, some of it may be vicarious (fab word for Y!A) however I also suspect that SOME of them are only to happy for "charlene-a-bluesky" to hook up with some 14 year old, get pregnant and then she gets her welfare flat, welfare cheque and welfare lifestyle - for life.
As for intervening, I would suggest you don't - at least not directly :(

I know when I was a dancer my mom wanted me to be covered. Nowadays there are designers that make clothes like that b/c they know the mothers will buy it. I think it is ridiculous and that clothes should be made to cover you (not talking about covering everything) but enough where you don't look like hookers b/c thats giving the 12 year old a thought that well il guess i have to dress like this. Its wrong.

also, what is with words on the backs of children's pants- also, i saw a mini skirt in the children's dept once, it had to be 4 inches at most of fabric from top to botton. and i've seen children in high heels. People often want kids to look like little adults, because it's cute, but what adults wear is skimming the edge of decency now and thus looks even more awful when put on children.

There really isn't much you can do. It's sad, but it's not abusive so you can't report her or anything. Plus girls tend to follow mom's example . . . so even if you talked to the girl, she is likely going to keep doing what she sees her mom doing. But I really don't get it. I wouldn't let my daughter wear 1/2 the stuff that is available on the racks today.

I totally agree! My fiance's little sister (11 years old) and she dressed like a tiny Paris Hilton. I think it's horrible! And I know such things are "in style" but I'm sure they arent the only things that are in style. I'm pretty sure that covering certain areas is always in style! At least in my opinion it should be. I think that parents dressing their children like little adults is fine...as long as the adult reference points are also dressing appropriately.

I think too many mom's are afraid to be parents. They're scared to enforce their own rules and risk not being their kids "friends" anymore. Kids have lots of friends, what they need is parents.
Also, some people just have no commn sense....

i know exactly what you mean!! what is with people wanting little girls to look sexy and older than they are? like those stupid Bratz dolls, they dress like hookers and some come with dress up stuff to look like them. a lady at my office came in yesterday showinf off a pic of her little girl (who just turned 5) at Libby Loo, she was wearing all sorts of makeup, hair all done up, and her outfit was barely a bikini top with some silver skin tight strechy pants, ITS INSANE!!!
