For those of you who have intact pets and are not professional breeders, why have you not spayed/neutered your animals?

Excuse me Little Miss Stephanie, but it's not necessarily ME that your irresponsibility effects. You're too ignorant for me to even explain it.

Good grief Poka D! God also "supposedly" created us naked...do you wear clothing?

Ok, let's blame everything on God. Including the ignorance of the human race.

I suppose you don't use birth control either? 15 kids and on welfare so the rest of us tax payers can support you and provide you with healthcare right?

Nanooke, how realistic is it to think that leash laws could be enforced to the extent you are talking about? I would much rather have my local area police protecting my child from some low-life predator then chasing down a person who had their dog in their front yard with no leash.

There are too many irresponsible people out there to allow possession of intact animals without some sort of license. Plain and simple.

I'm a Criminal Justice Major, believe me, the system has much more to worry about with murderers, rapists and other violent offenders then dogs that aren't on leashes. Sorry, but it's the truth. Not necessarily what I like to acknowledge, but the truth never the less.

Back into the real world now.....

2006-12-05 06:26:26 · update #3

Oh, Nanooka, what you say about the police is exactly what they do now. Not very effective is it?

A dog is a living being creature. Not a piece of land. I'm not dictating sh*t to you. I'm expressing my concerns on this topic. I'm looking at things rationally.

You have not given a solid reason as to why your dogs aren't fixed. All you have said is that they aren't and won't ever be. Just like everyone else who's on here asking how to take care of mom and her puppies, you swear they can't be reached by a male...

Thank you for your question - there are far to many unwanted pets out there.
Yes, I have neutered & spayed mine.

As an addition, Veneta please don't single out a particular area. People in the south are just as responsible or irresponsible as any other part of the country.
Yes, I'm from the south and resent your insinuation. We're not dumb and are just as caring and dedicated to our pets as other parts of the country.
This irresponsibility goes on all over this country and other countries as well.
It is sad to visit the local shelters and see all the unwanted pets that are out there. BTW - most of my pets have come from our shelter or I've rescued them from the side of the road.

I just got my dog a couple of months back, and took her to the vet for the first time within 2 weeks of receiving her. I got all of her shots updated and blood work done. I was scheduling my appointment to get her spayed but she went into heat to soon, She has finally stopped spotting this week, so i will once again schedule my appointment. I believe pet over population must be stopped and the most humane way is to spay/or neuter your pets. If you cannot afford it as many say, there are a lot of organization that will help you for little to nothing, or a very small payment plan. Any real animal rescue or animal treatment organization will have specials, or might just do the procedure for nothing if you explain your financial situation. Fact is those same groups are the ones in charge of putting so many animals to sleep, it breaks their harts not helping if someone asks. I do not agree with anyone who says it is to expensive. Please look into these alternative methods and do the right thing.

Yes WHY indeed!!! Irresponsible pet owners!!!There are many GOOD reasons why people SHOULD get their pets spayed/neutered!! Just a few listed here.......................
Spaying or Neutering Is Good for Your Pet!!!
Spaying and neutering helps dogs and cats live longer, healthier lives.
Spaying and neutering can eliminate or reduce the incidence of a number of health problems that can be very difficult or expensive to treat.
Spaying eliminates the possibility of uterine or ovarian cancer and greatly reduces the incidence of breast cancer, particularly when your pet is spayed before her first estrous cycle.
Neutering eliminates testicular cancer and decreases the incidence of prostate disease.
Spaying and neutering makes pets better, more affectionate companions.
Neutering cats makes them less likely to spray and mark territory.
Spaying a dog or cat eliminates her heat cycle. Estrus lasts an average of six to 12 days, often twice a year, in dogs and an average of six to seven days, three or more times a year, in cats. Females in heat can cry incessantly, show nervous behavior, and attract unwanted male animals.
Unsterilized animals often exhibit more behavior and temperament problems than do those who have been spayed or neutered.
Spaying and neutering can make pets less likely to bite.
Neutering makes pets less likely to roam the neighborhood, run away, or get into fights.
Spay/neuter pets, help do YOUR bit to reduce pet overpopulation!!
Be part of the solution.............not part of the problem!!!!!
My dogs are all neutered.

I have 2 dogs and 5 cats. One of my cats is not neutered the others are. The only reason he isnt fixed yet is because the holidays are here and I have no money to neuter him. After the holidays he will get the snip! I beleive all animals should be spayed or neutered unless they are for breeding purposes, and then only if you have Certifications on their health. The cat that is not neutered stays inside until he can get fixed.

The excuses I have received are my dog is not unattended outside, I am with her all the time. I don't have the money etc. So as a community service on my own dollar all of my pet quality pups will leave with a juvenille spay or neuter and limited registration. This is responsible breeding and there are many doctors who will oblidge.
Toodles.

To begine with there is no such thing as a professional dog breeder. Unless you mean the low life that run puppy mills.

An easy answer to you question is because I show my dogs, and they MUST be intact inorder to be shown.

I can think of a dozen reasons why some would not neuter their dog, but "couch potatoes" should be.

"how realistic is it to think that leash laws could be enforced to the extent you are talking about?"

It is very realistic! Maybe it would give animal control something better to do than seizing dogs for stupid reasons! What the **** is animal control FOR if it isn't to enforce a leash law? Roaming dogs are a problem in many places! If they would just ENFORCE a leash law with heavy fines and court appearances, you BET people would start controlling their animals! We would have much less unwanted puppies as well as fewer dog attacks! Instead of just ENFORCING the existing leash/neglect/abuse laws, we just pass MORE laws to be selectively enforced. People complain about aggressive roaming dogs for MONTHS, then the dogs attack someone and they pass a DDL or BSL. If they had just ENFORCED the leash law and responded to the complaints the attack wouldn't have happened in the first place. AC just needs to start DOING their job!

Some of mine are fixed, some are not. I have had show dogs for 30 years and have never had an accidental breeding, it is not difficult. But if you are to stupid or lazy to manage your animals, then yes, get them fixed.

I am not sold on a major elective surgery like S/N. Yes there are benefits, but there are also negatives, like a 30% higher chance of bone cancer, one of the most common cancers in dogs.

That said, I am getting 2 bitches fixed this winter. I have others I will not fix, as they are involved in performance events and altered dogs lose muscle mass and they will be more likely to get hurt, as well as not run as fast.

Leaving them intact is not a big deal if you are a responsible owner, although responsibility is sorely lacking in our country these days.

But, as nonook said, it is mostly an owner retention problem. Puppies are VERY hard to find in many shelters, as are small dogs. Some shelters have dogs shipped in from other areas because they don't have ENOUGH adoptable dogs. Dogs that are given up because they are very sick or aggressive are not adoptable.

I also agree that it isn't the governments place to tell me what I should and shouldn't do with my property. Land of the free my ***!!! Fascists!!!

We haven't spayed our 2 females because we don't plan to, unless it's a medical emergency. They will never be around male dogs that are intact when in heat, this I can guarantee. Plus, they are now finding out that leaving pets intact may actually be better for them. Spaying/neutering may cause more problems then it actually prevents.

Also, please do not feed me the line about overpopulation. We don't have an overpopulation problem, we have an owner retention problem. The numbers that are represented every year aren't broken down into categories like they should. Not all animals are euthanized because there aren't enough homes. There are a myriad of other reasons that are never mentioned and they aren't mentioned for a reason. It's to fool the public into thinking there is this problem when in reality, there isn't. If there was truly an overpopulation problem, there would be a hell of a lot more puppies in shelters then there are.

Something else that would go a long way to preventing mandatory spay/neuter is for towns and cities to enforce their leash laws.

KJ, so what your saying is that my dogs must be altered because the laws can' be enforced? So why should you dictate what I do with my property? What gives you the right to mess with my property?

You do not need cops in order go around looking for unconfined dogs and cats. If while on their rounds they see one, they take it into the shelter and fine the owners, make them spend a day in court and keep doing that. trust me, those that continue to allow their pets to roam, keep making the fine higher. if you have to after so many times, they take the dog or cat away. There doesn't need to be a task force in order to find roaming dogs and cats.

As I said, my dogs will not be getting pregnant, they are watched like hawks when in season and are in a yard that has a privacy fence around it.

KJ, but I have told you why. Just read the first paragraph of my answer and there's your reason.

So you don't believe that my dogs will never get pregnant? have you been to my home? Can you prove that what I say to you is a lie? I am out there with my dogs in and out of heat. It's just the way I am, they are never left unsupervised when outside.

Again, I will not get my dogs altered and that's my choice and should be a choice for everyone, mandatory spay/neuter is wrong and unconstitutional as my dogs are my property under the law.

M J, we may disagree with the mutt issue that I posted yesterday, but we are in agreement on this. Thumbs up for you!

Some people just cant be bothered, its just laziness. I know someone who's cat was ALWAYS pregnant it was such a shame and we ended up with 4 of the kittens (2 from the same litter and the other 2 from different ones) are cats were spayed.
People like this knock me sick and don't deserve animals.
I have pets now and they've all been done!

2006-12-05 06:14:47 · answer #9 · answered by YeahYeahYeah 4 · 3 0

people dont do it because they think their dog will be fine, and it will stay in the house and they will never have to worry about puppies. but they dont understand the risks to the animals health that they are just ignorant of, and then there are the people who think, well, if it has pups i'll make a few bucks. its all greed on the humans part, thats all

and i dont care what people say about not having the money to get the dog fixed, thats BS, if you cant afford a $100 procedure thats a one time deal, then you blatantly dont have the money to be owning a pet!!!
