There is no drinking permitted by both military law and Iraqi law. Unfortunately a large portion of the marines and soldiers that are stationed that are on the "front lines" and require proper frame of mind constantly. It is still not allowed in the Green Zone or Kuwait which is odd because that's kind of like boyscout camping instead of war.
Interestingly enough, yeast and home brewing kits for beer and wine are frequently shipped to Iraq from major internet companies in unmarked boxes which allows for the adaptation and overcoming of this dilemma. Personally, I would recommend not getting champagne yeasts since they create too much CO2 and end up damaging the litter water bottles that its being brewed in. But that's just my answer.

Yes, its sad but true, i went 12 months without drinking alcohol. I tell you, it would have been nice to have a beer now and then though. Would have washed the sand down better. The best thing is if you get a 4 day pass to Qatar, there you are allowed 3 beers a day, it is pretty sweet.

Yes, they never know when they might have to go out for a patrol or something, and it wouldn't be safe for anybody if they were drunk.
That being said, there are ways to sneak it over through the mail and I know plenty of people who did.....
A friend of mine took a plastic bottle of tea, dumped it out, filled it up with Jack Daniels, glued the lid back on and mailed it to her husband.
It ain't right, but it happens.

by law we must respect host nations laws and that means fallow the law of no alcohol. besides, a mission can come at any time and if you are drunk, well think of lots of drunken soldiers with automatic rifles in iraq.

yes, it's true. I haven't had a drop of alcohol in almost four months. It has to do with Islamic law.
