Much in the same way that American automakers had downsized many of their cars in the previous decade, Jeep downsized one of its nameplates, the Cherokee, for 1984.

Prior to this year, the Cherokee moniker was attached to what amounted to a sportier version of Jeep's Wagoneer. Mostly unchanged since its debut in the early 1960s, the Wagoneer was a large, truck-based, four-door wagon with four-wheel drive.

The former Cherokee, introduced as a 1974, shared most everything with the Wagoneer, including dimensions and engine selections. The major differences between the two were that the Cherokee was initially available only as a two-door (with the same wheelbase and length as the Wagoneer) and the Cherokee cost less than the more luxurious Wagoneer. A four-door Cherokee joined the lineup in 1977.

deeep breath.. ok .. in 1941 willys built jeeps for the military M38A1 and M3 and then in the 50s they started the CJ series with the introduction of the 1953 Cj3B and then in 1959 Kiaser bought willys overland and they were in there hands until 1969 when AMC bought them and introduced other CJ series CJ5 CJ7 Wagoneer and C10 (the C10 was already there just changed) and then in 1975 the first cherokee hit the market (although it was jus a stripped down version of the wagoneer) in 1985 (this is where jeep goes to hell) Chrysler bought jeep and in 1987 the first YJ hit the market then in 96 there was no jeep produced for retooling purposes (introduction of the TJ in 97) and that brings us pretty much up to speed .. the first year that the cherokee had its own body design was in 1983 .. but if you find one with woodgrain side panels .. you will see that AMC further ostrisized them by puttin a wagoneer emblem on them ...
