I would say it depends on the problem. If he or she is cheating, at the most one. If it is just a matter of not getting along, maybe you both better sit back and realize what you are doing wrong and work at changing it. Becuase a relationship is something that oyu always have to work at, and usually if there is a problem, there are also two sides to that problem. So if it is just a matter of getting along, there is no limit to how many chances you should give, but the more you try, the better it will get.

I would have to say only ONE! If they cannot prove themselves by being given one more chance, chances are they they will continue doing whatever it is they are doing wrong. If you give them any more chances they get the idea that you will always forgive them and so therefor they have no incentive to stop.
