I am happily married but I want something to tell my girlfriends something not altogether offensive but also truthful - a good explanation.

I'm in the same boat... Me and my partner have been drifting apart and the spark isn't there any more. We've both admited that there's a problem. We were supposed to be getting married in 6 months!
Sometimes you can get into a lul in your relationship and don't know if you'll come out of it together or apart. Many factors can bring you to this point.
Either you try to salvage what you've got or call it a day and go your seperate ways.
Not a nice position to be in, especially if you have different feelings.

It means he really cares for you as a friend, but you don't excite him romantically or possibly physically. This is if the person is being honest. If they are just trying to be polite or gentle, it means that they are not interested in you at all.
