He/She first of all has to see a need to change. Until that happens they won't change.

Tell this friend that you have to break up the friendship unless they stop smoking, if that doesn't give a reason to this person, then you know that their smoking is priority over your friendship, which tells you where you need to go.....

Why would you want to help a "Bad friend"? Anyway, the only person who can get this "friend" to stop smoking is him. If you start in, it is my experience he will just tune you out. I smoked for 30 years and my wife had smoked longer than that. Last Thanksgiving we both decided to quit. So we had our turkey dinner, went outside smoked our last cigarette together and haven't had one since. It was very hard the first three months, but now I don't even think about it. Point is... only the smoker can make the decision.
