It is only really bad at night, and I wake up having coughing fits around 3 am. I use a zicam spray, but I really want to know what else can be done....maybe to speed recovery?

You need to talk to a pharmacist and ask for a cough suppressant. You can buy an over-the-counter item with dextromethorphan which may help some. The best ones are kept behind the prescription counter and contain some form of codeine. You do not need a prescription for it but the pharmacist must be confident that you are not buying it to get high.

If you deal with a certain pharmacy or pharmacist, call them up and explain the situation and ask them for some codeine-type cough syrup. It will kill the cough.
Good luck

Hi there !
Follow these golden rules...
1. Brush your teeth at bed time especially when oral infections or throat infections are suspected..
2. Warm saline gurgling thrice daily...
3. one tsp cough syrup which contains anti histamines... at bed time..
4. if you feel dyspnoeic or uncomfortable at the normal lying down posture, elevate the head end position slighly..which will make you really comfortable.
5. If you are asthmatic, a bronchodilator as directed by physician...
if you start all these , at the start of the cough itself, result is assured...
if accompanied by fever, maybe get the opinion from the physician on antibiotics ...
best wishes...
