I read that too. I wanted to post this too but I got busy. If I feared it, I would have to believe in it. Some people can not comprehend the concept of "NO GOD" because they have been told it exists their entire life.

I'm not an atheist, but the question could still be asked; do YOU believe because of a fear of being judged in the afterlife?
And being held accountable for what? what would they need to be held accountable for?

Bett, Did you really think your question through ? Atheists do not believe in an, or the afterlife. We have nothing to fear.
I am 100% honest, truthful, helpful, considerate, and easy going because this is it. There is no more.
My afterlife is the soil. I am part of nature, for which I have a great love and understanding.
My friends and neighbors often ask me why I lead such a model life if I don't believe in God. It's what I would like to see in everybody, so I must set an example.
If a person walks the straight and narrow because of his fear of punishment after death. He is not an honest person at heart.

No, I believe in the fact that I or the universe holds me accountable right now. I feel that when I make a mistake or a situation keeps happening to me it is because I have not learned from it yet. I will suffer the consequences here and now; once I have learned to change, I will move onto the next segment of my life.

i believe that a person can hold themselves accountable for their own life here and now, because it has been clearly stated that in the afterlife, a person will have no fears, worries, or despairs of what is to happen.l believe that no one should fear God, or the afterlife.

That doesn't make sense. Many religious people behave the way they do because of a threat of something terrible in the afterlife. Atheists simply do not believe in an afterlife. For them, once you're dead, it's over. Blackness. The end.

There is no accounting at all. Be a right-minded person just because that's the right thing to do. If you fail, don't make a huge fuss of it, you're still the same person. Correct the error as best you can and keep being right-minded.

There should never be a need for forgiveness or grudges. We are all on the road of time, how great it'd be if we honored each other as much in our successes as in our failings.

Man holds himself accountable. As he pulls the knife from the body, he is accountable to getting out quick, before someone sees. As he beats a child or another, he is accountable to 'doing it right, and making sure they know it'. He is accountable to pay as little tax as possible, using any means, an not getting caught by the gov't.

See, if no one sees them, they can do and say what they want. They are 'free thinkers', and expound on the ideas for everyone, and to make dang sure they all believe it. Even if it means ignoring or fudging a little. But, who cares? No one is looking over their shoulder.

I'm not really an atheist. I'm relgiously confused.

not believeing has nothing to do with fear. its the lack of proof. its people who say their god is loving, but he'll burn you for eternity if you don't believe in him- even if you've spent your life helping people and having great morals.
why would anyone even want to try to understand or believe in that?
and why would someone whose smart want to take up with religions that tell scientists (doctors included) their studies are all fake, despite over whelming evidence otherwise?

It wouldn't be very smart to live in denial of the afterlife. I don't believe in this reality, maybe because I'm afraid of it, but more because of I can't get over that girls are different from boys...it's crazy!

My morality comes from within and doesn't require an over seer to tell me how to live and act. I am accountable to three people in my life...myself and my two daughters.

The only time a person would have a fear of accountability would be were they actually questioning the morality of what they were doing.
