What is the exchange rate? With which Country? with US it is $1US to $1.45NZ. With UK it is 1pound to $2.87NZ. With Europe it is 1euro to $1.94NZ.

What is the best way to get there? (remember, this is often determined by your PURPOSE in going there!) By plane (it's an island, a few days sail from Australia)... from UK/Europe you can either go either way around the world - either via HongKong or Singapore or Korea (depending on airline) or via Los Angeles. From US can travel direct from LA or San Fransisco, or can fly via some Pacific Islands or Hawaii.

What phrases do you need to know in order to get food, lodging, and directions? We speak English here, am presuming you do too from the question you posted?

What places/activities should NOT be missed? Queenstown (South Island) is great for adventure activities and is VERY scenic. West Coast of South Island is also very beautiful and rugged - especially Fox and Franz Josef glaciers near Hokitika. Rotorua has touristy shows of Maori culture (indigenous population) as well as amazing geothermal activities (hot pools, mud pools, geysers etc). Whole country is nice, but I would recommend you spend more time in South Island than North.

What forms of local public transportation are available? Most cities and major towns have local bus services - quality depends on location. Auckland & Wellington have passenger train services - Wellington better quality than AUckland.

How much should one budget of food, lodging, transportation, attractions, etc? A standard motel/hotel might cost between $60-$150 NZ dollars per night for 2, depending on quality & location. Most major towns/cities have hostels/backpackers which cost about $15-20NZ per person (to share a dorm with others) or $40-50NZ for private room. Food - expect to pay between $10-$30 for main course dinner at most restaurants. Attractions vary...

What is the average temperature in the winter? summer? Varies depending on location. Most places between 20-30 degrees celcius during summer days (10-15 at night?), and in winter can vary from 0-20 during days and -10 to 10 during nights. But NZ weather is very variable - can be sunny & warm one minute and cold & raining an hour later... pays to always have a jacket somewhere closeby!

What clothes or other supplies should a traveler bring in order to be comfortable? Just the usual travel things. If planning on doing any outdoor activities, you need to be well prepared with warm non-cotton clothing, hat, gloves, quality raincoat (even in summer). If just hanging around cities or driving around, then jeans, & tshirts good all year round. Shorts in summer. Warm jacket in winter. Can pick up most everyday accessories in NZ fairly cheap & easily ('The Warehouse' is a big chain store in most towns in NZ which sells almost everything pretty cheap - kind of like a Walmart?)

What time of year is best to visit? Depends what you want to do... skiing etc is great in winter. Beaches & tramping probably better in summer.

Run out of time sorry, might answer some more of your questions tomorrow.

Well first, locals would not be able to answer most of these questions. Unfortunately, no matter how much a person travels, they rarely look into their own back yard. :-)

What is the exchange rate?
** Against which other currency? Try: 'xe.com'

What is the best way to get there?
** Fly, or I suppose you could go by boat from some places.

What places/activities should NOT be missed?
** Too many to mention, get a guide and pick those you would enjoy. Everything is worth seeing. Recommend the Southern Scenic Drive in Otago, shark diving & a trip to the flight club to fly a plane in Kaikoura, Twilight penguin tours in Dunedin, Waitomo Caves, and a shipwreck dive if you scuba.

What forms of local public transportation are available?
** InterCity coaches, Shuttles from city to city, trains in some areas, ferry from north to south islands, city buses, tour buses

How much should one budget of food, lodging, transportation, attractions, etc?
** Depends on you and what you want. Budget traveller or Standard traveller. Staying in hostels - $17-24/night (NZD), hotels $50-100/night. Probably $10/day for food ($20 with the pub) for average. Everthing else varies on how often you want to travel and how, and what type of activities you plan to do, and how long you are staying. Probably NZD $50-100/day budget would suffice if not a luxury traveller.

What is the average temperature in the winter? summer?
** Depends on the City, warmer in Auckland & colder in Dunedin. Snows on occassion in South Island, rainy in Summer. Nice in March/April.

What clothes or other supplies should a traveler bring in order to be comfortable?
** Time of year? If hiking or walking a lot, good boots and change of socks and a towel. Staying in hostels, a good sleeping bag & neck pouch. Good travel guide with maps. Clothes you can layer and as few as possible. A good backpack for ease of travel. Buy what you can in NZ and don't hassle with travelling with it.

What time of year is best to visit?
** April

What festivals/activities are available at certain times of year only?
** Wearable Arts Awards, others ???

What national holidays might affect travel/sightseeing plans?
** Christmas, most of the country shuts down for 3-weeks. Easter, everything is closed (mandated).

What documents should one bring?
** Passport, ISIC card (if student), ATM/Visa card, entry/work visa if needed, copy of birth cert in case passport is lost, some initial traveller's cheques in case ATM card has issues

What phrases do you need to know in order to get food, lodging, and directions?
** Actually it is MickeyD's but.....if you eat at McD or like in NZ, they will ask if it is for eat in or take away (will not understand what you mean by 'to go') and eat in has extra taxes. 'Ta' & 'Cheers' mean thank you. Everything says 'Lovely'. Tips are not standard but certainly appreciated (they get a living wage not $2/hr). Drinks at the pub are pints or half pints (men only drink pints). Directions & speed are kilometers not miles. It is really all semantics, it is still English. If someone in a pub calls you a wanker, it is not good :-)
