i have seen a psychiatrist and psychologist and have been diagonised with social anxiety .i am currently on anti-depressantsand i also practice deep muscle relaxation techniques and breathing exercises.i have got abit better but i have a problem with my 'fight or flight reflex'.i feel like i cannot cope anymore.when i walk in quiet streets or places and a car just appears suddenly or a person looks at me i jerk, almost running away, move really quickly(sort of an adrenaline surge).i don't have much of a problem with crowded places as i just blend in.when i am walking in hallways and someone appears the same happens.when people enter rooms that i am in(when they get me unaware) i jump and feel like running away.it is an automatic response and it has become part of me.i have been signed off work as i was always been kicked out of jobs and everyone thlnks that i am an idiot.i just cannot control it and people are always gossiping and i have become a laughing stock.what do i do?

Work on it. Keep your head UP and your eyes roving so you will see ANYTHING coming that might surprise you.

It will take some work but you can do it.

The men freshly out of Vietnam, the Gulf War and Iraq War will jump like crazy when a sharp sound like a car backfiring or anything that is loud. Instinct is to "hit the dirt". Most all of them eventually deal with being jumpy like that. I did. If "they" can learn to "hit the dirt" to keep from being killed, and get over it, then you can learn to accept a civil person walking up to you or a car coming around a corner.

Relax man.......kick back and put yourself IN those kind of situations so you can learn to control being jumpy.
Good luck. Pops

Go to a Dr. that understands panic and anxiety disorders and how to treat them because whomever you are seeing is not treating the problem sufficiently. Some people need anti-anxiety medication which many doctors are reluctant to prescribe because of the potential for addiction.
Quality of life is what it is about and if exercise and relaxation techniques aren't enough then a prescription anti-anxiety medication taken on a regular basis may be called for.
I had a friend with a panic disorder and a nut for a Doctor said she should go out to the woods and throw her keys into the forest. What an idiot. As if that would help. That Doctor did not "believe" in anxiety disorders as anything more than a mind over matter problem. Sorry, but these disorders can be debilitating! And it is so easily treatable so that is a shame.

Keep up what you've been doing. The more you fight against those automatic responses the easier those situations will become when you brain learns that no harm will come to you.
You just have to be patient. Getting better takes time. Don't give up. Take one day at a time.
Make up a couple positive mantra to you can say to yourself to counteract the thoughts and feelings of anxiety.
Like- I am doing really great today.
I can be happy.
I am intelligent and I can beat this.
There is nothing to be afraid of it's all in my head.
I am calm and capable.
Every day brings a new opportunity for me to be a better a me.
I will make it!

Keep on medications and talk therapy. This will help. It may get worse before getting better. You have a way with words, it may help you to write . I had a feelings book. It helped a lot. I learned at the age of 40 that I could thing of words that rhyme so I also took up poetry. If you have any artistic talent you can draw. Make sure to keep your writings or drawing away from eyes that you don't wish to see them. People don't understand out thoughts and they will be more than happy to tell you how to think or feel. Good luck. You've made the first step.

You're NOT an idiot. All those people who don't understand mental illness are just mental. I would suggest you take up a hobby, go fishing or hang with a dear friend. Sometimes, you just have to take the bull by the horns. Good luck. See ya.

My theory of your situation is that you're a very sensitive person. Which is OK, I'm the same, same age.
But I've learned a way to block the sensitivity to others' emotions.

If this is your situation, please contact me (centaur1122) via Yahoo! Messenger and I'll teach you how to fix this.
