Cat-scratch disease is an infection caused by bacteria (germs) carried in cat saliva. The bacteria can be passed from a cat to a human. Doctors and researchers think cats may get the bacteria from fleas, although this hasn't been proved.
You can get cat-scratch disease from a cat bite or cat scratch. You can get the infection after a cat scratches you if the cat's paws have the bacteria on them. (A cat can get the bacteria on its paws when it licks itself.) With a cat bite, the cat can pass the bacteria to you in its saliva. You can also get the bacteria in your eyes if you pet a cat that has the bacteria on its fur and then rub your eyes. Many people who get cat-scratch disease do not remember being scratched or bitten by a cat.
Cat-scratch disease is not a severe illness in people who are healthy. But it can be a problem in people with weak immune systems. People with weak immune systems include those who are receiving chemotherapy for cancer, those who have diabetes or those who have acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

Cat Scratch Fever is caused by being bitten or scratched by a cat that has a bacteria called Bartonella henselae. In humans it manifests as a swelling of the lymph nodes and fever, although it's not really dangerous unless you have a compromised immune system. In cats it's also not dangerous if the cat has a strong immune system, but if the cat's immune system is compromised then the bacteria attacks white blood cells and the spleen, eventually killing the cat.
Bartonella is common in cats in hot, humid climates. We're from Kentucky and had two cats who had the disease. One died from it, the other is almost 15 years old and doing fine. Nobody in my family has contracted cat scratch fever.

Cat Scratch Fever is an album by Ted Nugent released in 1977, as well as the name of the album's title song.
The name alludes to a disease referred to as CSD or cat scratch fever, so called because it is typically transmitted from cats to humans by cat scratches. Questioned recently, Ted Nugent states that he never had this disease, but hears regularly from the occasional fan who has contracted it. However, it can be argued that CSD is not really the basis of the title song, but a way to cleverly disguise another message. There are some pretty obvious double entendres in the song alluding to sex and women, if the lyrics are interpreted as slang. The title song has been repeatedly covered, among others by Motörhead (on the March ör Die album) and by Pantera.

"Cat Scratch Fever" by Ted Nugent
Well I don't know where they come from
But they sure do come
I hope they comin' for me
And I don't know how they do it
But they sure do it good
I hope they doin' it for free
They give me cat scratch fever
Cat scratch fever
The first time that I got it
I was just ten years old
I got it from some kitty next foor
I went and see the Dr. and
He gave me the cure
I think I got it some more
They give me cat scratch fever
Cat scratch fever
It's nothin dangerous
I feel no pain
I've got to ch-ch-change
You know you got it when you're going insane
It makes a grown man cryin' cryin'
Won't you make my bed
I make the pussy purr with
The stroke of my hand
They know they gettin' it from me
They know just where to go
When they need their lovin man
They know I do it for free
They give me cat scratch fever
Cat scratch fever,
