He's being perhaps a little silly... but it's a style thing, and other companies have higher end names. You can't really hear much of a difference between the sound quality, but brand names are important to people. Also- the user interfaces are different between different vendors- and perhaps he just doesn't like the way the buttons are organized (that's valid).
Speakers, on the other hand, sound very different between brands.

I had a few Sony car stereos. I hate to say that Sony is a very horrible company. I think their prices are too high and they put too much junk in their products. Sony doesn't sound like a brand for me. I would go with Kenwood, Alpine, Blaupunkt, or Clarion. They are the best nd the prices are comparable to Sony. I hate sony subwoofers. Most Sony audio products have too much distortion. Believe me, even if you pay high prices, with Sony you won't get the best quality that fits what you need.

No, Sony does not.
I like sony, and I rely on them alot. I tried their car sterio but I started experiencing problems after a year and a half. right now I'm just pluging my iPod into the car's head-unit (stereo) as it's alot more reliable.
If you're looking for sound quality plug the iPod through an auxilary input jack and maybe consider some speakers and/or subwoofers. Good luck!

I personally had a few bad experiences with Sony car audio systems before. A friend of mine bought a low end X-plod CD player. It couldn't read CD-R's, even when it was quoted to read CD-RWs. Sound quality was terrible, even my cheap Kenwood player sounded better with the same speakers. It also had massive skipping even when reading original CDs. Do note that this was while driving on fairly smooth roads. Later on, my cousin bought a high-end Sony X-plod CD player/changer/speakers package. Even this sounded worse than my Kenwood.
My conclusion : Sony does have many features and funtions, and some cool displays. But when it comes to sound and product quality, they've a long way to go.

I know a few people with sony headunits. My brother has one in his neon and i previously had one in my expedition. Other companies make better cd layers why of course but they begin to get very expensive. Sony headunits sound great to me and tehy arnt to pricy. I would recommend a sony cd player to anyone that didnt want to spend much money, i think they sound great and they have most of the same features such as other brans, like xm ready, cd-r, some change colors, and etc. I really like them

Get Alpnie instead. It's better sound quality, but a little bit more pricey. Well worth it.
