It's never the same as running on the road. But, what I've found that works is to keep changing the grade/ incline. I do not drop it below '"4.0" and take it up to "10.0" . I do not, however, change my pace. I find this to be the best way to simulate outdoor running.

If you keep the treadmill level you'll burn the same number of calories if you go two or three minutes longer.

An hour. There's no difference in the amount of time you run.
