Put a boltthrough all three using washers inbetween the wood. Place a flat washer, lock washer and a nut on the end. Connect equal length pieces of chain or rope from the middle to each side. Stand up the boards sepereate to make a tripod. determine the height you want your cross board to be. Level and mark it with a pencil. Attach your wood cross piece (use screws). There are many easels available at the Arts supply stores such as Michael's and Hobby Lobby. If that is too expensive or inconvenient then get 3 pieces of wood 1" by 2" by 5', 3 screw in hooks, a couple of pieces of chain, another piece of wood that is wide enough to support the work and another piece of wood that is thin but wide enough to form a lip to nail to secure the work. Take two of the 5' long pieces and mark a x on their ends. These will serve as outside legs. Then cut off an equal amount of wood to form an angle somewhere around 30 degrees. Drill a hole the same distance down from the top of the three 5 ' pieces of wood I would say about 4 cm or 2 inches. Then get a 6 1/2 " long carriage bolt and washer and nut and secure them together with the uncut board in the middle. Screw your lip board to the support board with wood screws. Then screw the support board to the two outside legs. Install the the hooks to the back of the two outside legs and one hook to the front of the middle leg. Attach the chains. This is to keep the legs from spreading apart foo far. .If the structure is unsteady then buy some feet and screw them in the bottoms of the legs. These should make the contraption quite sturdy and ready to use. Of course you should sand and stain it so that it looks good and doesn't give you splinters.

I hope this gets you started.

Start with the 3 longest legs. Cut 2 boards the same size, but make sure the tops are cut at an angle and fit nicely together in a triangle shape. Next you would take another board for the back supporting leg and cut both sides at angles so it fits nicely with the other legs and of course so it sits level on the floor when it it stretched out. This leg will be longer than the others. Next you'll need to attach a hinge between all 3 of these legs at the top where they meet. You will also need 2 folding hinges for support reasons in the lower half of your front to back legs. Make sure these fold the same direction when you put them on. They should stretch out and lock to hold the easel in place when your painting on it. Finally you'll need a board across the middle to set your canvas on. Good Luck!
