trasnlation..............................

I think is hard for them learn it… for example the Spanish (I don’t have the accents or the n~ so sorry for that). Most of then want it to learn it in this day’s that is becoming a strong languages in US. The universal languages are English and French, the humanity pick up English but the future are Chinese.

You could learn Chinese for example is the most spoken language in the earth, no? Just depends what you want or what you are looking for.

If you are in Rome…..

I find it amusing that one user responded that she demands that people speak proper English with proper sentence structure. You don't have to be a non-English speaker to be lacking in this department, I mean look at all of the slang that is used on the streets, these are American born citizens butchering the language. I believe that when you are living in a foreign country you should speak the language or at least learn enough to get by. I don't think that the host country should cater to you simply because you don't speak the language. It is a matter of respect to learn the country's language and this does not only apply in the US.
Also, to say that most American refuse to learn another language is a generalization and assumes refusal. Perhaps a lot of people have never had the opportunity or necessity.

I've always wondered that myself and yes, I am an American and proud of it.
That being said, why is it that Americans can go to other countries and then demand that the people there communicate to us in English. How arrogant is that?!
We all know that English is the language here so what is this paranoia about the relationship between learning another language and --- oh I don't know ---- losing our American identity. It's insane.
Personally, I think if you are traveling or doing business with people from another country, it behooves you to at least learn a few phrases of that language. Most people love it when a foreigner trys to speak their language.

I think they are shallow. If anything learning a second language is always better. You can get around in a different country, and they can also be scared that English might be on its way of extinction..lol...\well educated or business people want to learn more languages.

Being American, I know what you mean, but i completely oppose that because i am currently living in panama as a missionary and i know how hard it is to live in a country where the language is not your heat language and the people are not tolerant.

i think that many american people want to learn different questions. the one who refuses is mostly the government who wants the american culture to be known all around the world and have power. don't forget that Bush asked to make of the american culture, a product without any borders. fortunately, most of the countries refused it.

I dont know, i think people like that are really ignorant. I've ask my self that question before, and can't come up with an answer. When me and my friends speak spanish infront of people the other people look at us as if we were talking about them. But in reality, we dont even know they exist.
