Basically so we know exactly how much is going into the body and how much is coming out, so we know that the patient isn't in fluid retention or how much someone is eating if they are malnourished

Julie was right on about answering this. We calculate the amount of fluids taken in and the total output to make sure they are eliminating properly. There should be a balance between what you take in and what you put out. Any major discrepenscies can mean major trouble. This technique is especially used in patients with severe dehydration, congestive heart failure, kidney dialysis, and those that are malnourished. Hope this answers your question more clearly.

this is an easy way to detect too much or too little fluid volume in the body. say your intake is 1500 ml, output is 100 ml in an 8 hour shift. this is significant data for the medical staff. the staff would report this to the doctor, after compiling vital signs, current weight and checking the bladder for retention.

To ensure that the waste elimination processes are working properly. If they aren't working right then toxins will build up in the body.

My son was a preemie and the nurses had to weigh the clean diapers before they put them on him, mark the time and then when they changed him they had to weigh it again. Not enough pee can indicate a kidney problem.

mainly to check for water {fluid} retention .if you take in more than you put out that could mean you r retaining water for some reason.if you are retaining fluid that means you need Lasix or water pills to expel it so does not gather around your heart or lungs or your legs don't swell up.
