I have a bottle of 18-year McAllan (sp?) that I received as a gift a little over a year ago. I opened it the night i got it and poured a drink. Put the cap back on it and it's been sitting in my pantry ever since.

Do you think it is still good?

With Scotch especially a single malt no matter what the age is it’s the best it will ever be when it’s bottled, regardless if it’s just from the store or been sitting in a cabinet for years and years. Scotch producers intend it that way and they want you to enjoy it right away.

In answer to your question I’m not aware of Scotch having a shelf life opened or unopened unless it’s been overheated, froze or something was put in it to contaminate it, so it should be just fine.

No. Since alcohol is a natural preservative and scotch whisky has at least 40% alcohol the whisky will stay good until the end of time. Did u know there are scotches on the maket that have been aged for over 50 years? 100 years? (Sometimes priced at $2000 and up) I know its crazy but aging the whsky allows it develop a very smooth a mellow character. Realize when I say aged I mean in oak barrels not the glass bottle.

Go ahead and enjoy. The Scotch is one of the best. Eighteen-year-old MacAllan goes for well over $100. If you don't regard it as head and shoulders above your present scotch, you might put it aside and don't drink it until you really appreciate it. At the rate the price is increasing, it may well be over $2-300. As it is, some liquor stores have stopped carrying it. I only buy 12-year-old scotch.
