I should think so, yes.
Buddhism teaches that Violence is wrong and that all people have the right to lead their life with their way and that there are many ways to attain enlightenment, the Buddhist way being but one. That is why you do not see the in fighting between the different Buddhist schools and why Buddhist monks routinely teach mediation classes to none Buddhist and never once try to convert them to "convert" to Buddhism.
Still, if all religions and all people were so enlightened, then there wouldn’t be a need for Buddhism in the first place. Right?

Probably not, you would have the militant person who feel morally superior joining up, finding that it was not exactly what they were looking for and starting a different sect of Buddhism, one where you can force your beliefs on others, and generally be a judgmental ****.
Let's face it the masses would destroy a beautiful religion.
I like things the way they are. When is the last time a Buddhist pissed you off?

Tell us about the conflict in Thailand going on as we speak between the Buddhist and Muslim factions. Is that the kind of low keyed approach you are speaking of!

Yep. As far as I can see, Buddhism is pretty much religions only shinning example.
