No, not at all. We are talking about severe depression; where the chemicals in the brain are awry. Medication is always the last resort, that is most people exhaust every other holistic, natural, etc., anything out there, really before they even consider meds. And who said medication was cheap! And I don't think it is necessarily a cure-all, but they do find relief. And I do know people who have benefited from taking medication-and yes, I can not stress it enough, it was a last resort! As far as getting completely better, that may not happen; depending on the severity of the depression, however any relief or alleviation in symptoms is an improvement.

I am not anti-medication, but I believe the pharmaceutical industry is a monster. Today, the AP released a story about a government Alzheimers researcher that accepted $285,000 from Pfizer for "private consulting": http://www.nytimes.com/2006/12/05/health/05drug.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

I have been treated with anti-depressants on and off, when I could afford them, for over a quarter of a century, a few helped a little, but had terrible side effects that made life worse.

It was only a couple of years ago that someone suggested St. John's wort; for me, it has been the wonder drug that I had been searching for. In over 25 years, not one doctor, psychiatrist, or therapist suggested it. Why? Because the drug manufacturers make no profit from it. Available over the counter, cheap, and with fewer side effects than most medications.

There is the possibility that St. John's wort would not have worked so well for me had I not taken SSRIs for some time prior. A side effect (and possibly the MAJOR effect) of SSRIs is that they spur new brain cell growth in the limbic system of the brain. This system produces and controls the brain chemicals that affect mood:

I now work with people who have mental health and substance abuse issues and run a Yahoo group called "without_aa"; can't wait to see the AA questions.

I know of people who have been helped by drug therapy. Sometimes there are "chemical imbalances" in people's brains that need to be corrected. Although, drugs are not full proof, there is alot more to dealing with depression than taking drugs. Exercise, a good diet, a positive outlook on life, but it's hard to do when you are depressed.

There also is a new drug free therapy that implants electrical stimulation in the brain, and a sort of pacemaker that can be adjusted. This is a new thing that's out.

As far as any particular studies, I don't have that information.

If you don't have depression, treatment won't work. But if you do, then the right treatment can make a huge difference on quality of life. I base this on personal experience. I no longer need anti-depressants but for some years I did and without them I would have been miserable, sick and I would have had a very poor quality of life.
Generally when people are so angry about the efficacy of anti-depressant medication they either have never experienced debilitating depression or they are in denial about a condition they have or someone they know has.
If you don't need it, of course you shouldn't take it.
As for me, it was a life saver and my life went from black and white to living color. Not to mention that it greatly helped my concentration, energy level etc.

Depression is a chemical imbalance and using anti-depressants help in a majority of cases. I was given Zoloft for Post-partum depression after the birth/death of my daughter in August and it has helped immensely. Zoloft can also be used to help women with severe PMS.

You're an idiot.

In the last 10 years alone there has been more research on brain chemistry than in any time in history. Researchers are coming up with new, and more effective ways, to combat mood disorders.

I have seen depression from both sides. Medication and competent psychotherapy are wonderful things.

So sit down. Shut up. And don't hurt yourself.

YES! Psychiatrists have TOTALLY DESTROYED my life. http://www.theforbiddenknowledge.com/manipulation/index.htm
The medical industry is an INDUSTRY! A BUSINESS! They create sickness. Doctors have diagnosed me with Borderline, bi-polar, bio-schizo, body-dismorphic.... the only thing that was ever wrong was that my dad punched me in the face and then called the cops to have me medicated. He LIED!
My life is over! I have to get injections for the rest of my life. Medecine is the CAUSE of the braindisorder. It causes brain damage. It is part of the New World Order, Illuminati plan of population reduction. We are all asleep. We are all brainwashed. http://www.antipsychiatry.org
