A god parent is responsible for teaching the child about God, for encouraging them and supporting them though their spiritual journey, for praying for the family, and for guiding the parents and giving them tools for helping their children grow, and for the parents to lead a good example. you will take this vow to God, be careful and decline if you aren't willing to do all of this.

You will be asked to take certain vows....to see that the child has a Christian upbringing.

Whether or not you are currently a "practicing" Catholic...you are still one in God's eyes, as you were Baptized. That made you a Catholic and a member of the Body of Christ.

That is what will happen when the baby is Baptized, too.

Whatever your current feelings....if you can't take the vows and promise to be a true Godfather in every sense of the word....then do the honorable thing...and decline.

I have people decline all of the time when I tell them what is expected of them.

A godfather is expected to play a significant role in the future of the child. Its considered an honorary thing, but if the parents should die, or be unable, the godparent should be able to watch over the child's religious development. Can you honestly do that?

It is unusual for a godfather to not be catholic. Are the parents catholic? If they are, what will be expected of you is to solemnly promise that, if the parents die or become unable to do so themselves, that YOU will see that the child is raised in the catholic faith. If this is for any other ceremony, usually the godparents are simply spiritual guardians for the child who are expected to look after its welfare in things spiritual (and in some cases temporal).

It depends on how religious the parents are. The best thing for you to do ask the child's parents what do they expect from you. You might get twenty answers here. But that's not helpful if those answers don't reflect what the parents expect.

There are godparents in many religions. Check the chart below:

I've got two godfathers. One is from my baptism and the other from my confirmation. A godfather is there to guide a child when a he needs it. they could give advices just like a parent does. My borther's godfather takes him out to games and they do lots of fun stuff. It's not like you have to take the role of a parent. Just talking to a child and getting somewhat involved will let them know you're there for them.

Godfathers were created for one specific person. To be an alternate father if the bio father dies.
godfathers usually give gifts to their godchildren, although that was not the purpose.
However if something happened to the bio father, it would be nice if the child remembers the godfather affectionately.
Some even provide the money to send the godchild to college.

congratulations!!! but you probably should have talked in depth to the parents before accepting this honor. but you still can talk to them and see what they expect from you. i'm sure the chose you after careful consideration. they obviously think a lot of you and consider you a positive influence in their child's life. imo, it's like picking a 2nd set of parents for your child.
if you have love in your heart , use good judgment and love kids, then this won't be a problem for you. i would also suggest that you stay in steady contact with the parents to see if anything is needed for the child. this is a big responsibility but it's very fulfilling. i don't have any links where you can get detailed info, except maybe this one.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godparents
good luck!!!

Being a 'godfather' has only to do with catholicism and not christianity. If you were a catholic as a child, you should be okay.

Typically..a god parent promises to take responsibility of the child religious education. You have to ask the parents how they view the responsibility. For some..it's just a label...for others..they take it very seriously.

Being a godparent does mean you will raise the child if something happens to the parents.
