Well, Buddhism is actually the 6th (or 5th) largest religion in the world, depending on how you figure it. Christianity being the largest and Roman Catholicism being the largest denomination by far. (1.05 Billion Roman Catholics world wide.) When you consider that the second largest religion in the world, Islam, has a total estimated followers between all of it's branches of 1.3 Billion, Roman Catholicism in and of itself is the single largest religious denomination in the world.

When discussing denominations of religion, Mahayana Buddhism [(Great Vehicle) that includes Pure Land Buddhism(Amidism) and the various Zen schools.] has approximately 185 Million followers. That places it about #5 or #6 in the list. Although it could be argued that is should be a little higher.

The truth is, it's ranking is irrelevant. All that matters is that there are people that are trying to better themselves and the people around the through the practices set forth by the lord Buddha.

As for being low profile, that is a true statement. Buddha teaches that we should show others the way by leading an exemplary life. Buddhists practice Buddhism and if someone says, "Hey! I noticed something different about you, what is it?" Then we show them. We do not walk up to people and ask them if they want to change their lives by becoming Buddhist. It's interesting when you notice how large Buddhism is even though it is NOT an evangelistic religion.

I hope this is what you were looking for.

Except when a Buddha Monk sits in the middle of the town square and douses himself with gasoline and sets himself on fire. Though I haven't seen that recently, I guess.
