The bird spreads its wing when it pushes downward, making in effect a parachute. It then pulls the wing in a little when it brings it upward in the flapping cycle. This is less resistant in the air and the combination gives the bird its lift. This is very similar to swimming as you cup your hands pulling the water and then turn them sideways when you bring them forward.

Birds have really light feathers, which gives the wind an advantage to pick them up. Air goes over and under the wings, but above the wing is faster. Their wings are called airfoils.

Why would you ask a question and then essentially answer it yourself. The purpose is to ask questions about things you want the answer to, not things you already know. they get really good grades in high school and then join the airforce and graduate from flight school. then they get there wings. it's all up after that.
