I'm trying to see if i can convert a regular smoke detector into a cigarette smoke version. Has anyone tried this before with success.

there is nothing to convert it will detect cigarette smoke -the limit is the VOLUME of smoke ( you can test this my blowing cigarette smoke at it ) they are designed not to activate in an average smoking environment for obvious reasons - the only way to make them more sensitive is to concentrate the smoke ( since it does rise i would try a cone shaped shield - like a lamp shade around it with vent holes at the top and an open bottom ) (this should prevent air currents from dissipating the smoke that rises to it - you might want to lower it closer to the smoke source - as I'm sure you've noticed cigarette smoke cools fast and hovers below ceiling level)

DO NOT DEPEND ON IT FOR FIRE DETECTION IF YOU MAKE ANY CHANGES _ BUY ANOTHER ONE AND MOUNT AS RECOMMENDED
