In the US, using the verb 'fornicate' could be considered offensive or vulgar or not? For example, when refering to people having prmeritasex, could you use it with friends, family members, at work?

Hi. In my opinion it is not vulgar when used as you describe. But it only refers to unmarried participants.

Although there's nothing wrong with fornication providing your both unmarried consenting adults. The term fornicate is very suggestive, and can be easily be misconstrued. The very word tends to lead people to believe the two people are doing something wrong because they don't really understand the word in it's true definition. If one person of the two were married that is construed as "Adultery" which in the eyes of God is prohibited. People are more likely to understand this word in it's true form because it tends to be more direct in it's definition just by looking at the word, even in speech. They will know that what the two people did what was wrong. With mature aptitudes the average person will know partly if not fully what the word ( adultery } means without ever having been told it's true meaning whether through school, word of mouth, etc, The very word just seems to jump right out at you. When a word is not really understood we tend to develop our own somewhat misguided ideas of what it means and once we've embedded that definition in our heads. Then that definition is what we will believe it is from there on even if someone tries to correct us. I suppose it would also depend on the maturity level of the groups. The word fornicate is best left in the bible and is not really the best word to use in your everyday office watercooler talk or even when your out on the town with your friends.

I think its a good accurate word to use. However, Fornicate usually has a negative connotation. So when you say it it gives the impression that you disagree with peoples decision to have sex out side of marriage, it pretty much makes it clear that you think that that is wrong. Which is fine if you think that way, (i do), but make sure you understand that that is how you sound, and how you feel. You also may not want to come off sounding too critical which can make people defensive, and uncomfortable.

Fornicate implies a certain immoral or illicit nature to the act of sex. It is more appropriately used to describe a man having sex with a prostitute or committing adultery.
The word itself is correct and proper English, and not considered a swear word. But it would be insulting to describe someone's sexual relationship as fornication, and they would take offense at it.
If you wish to avoid using the words "premarital sex" to discuss someone's relationship, try using phrases like "they are physically intimate" or "they have consummated the relationship."

Fornicate is kind of formal or technical sounding.

I am not sure in what context you would be using the work when talking with friends or family or coworkers?

You might use the term "Intimate" as in, "They were not married yet but they shared an intimate relationship."

Which could mean many things, but including sex.

Nobody's sex life is anybody elses business anyway. So if it's close friends you're talking with you can use "sex" "*f**u**c**k**i**n**g*doing it", banging, boned, etc.

If it's grandma and mom in the kitchen at sunday dinner....stay away from the topic anyway!

If it's work......dont talk about sex at work.

What an interesting question!

The proper definition of this word is to talk. Is talking vulgar. Granted the slang that has came from the word means other things so the answer to your question would be based upon the education level of the people involved.

Is insulting.
Forbidden to Christians. Jesus Christ restored God’s original standard of monogamy (Mt 5:32; 19:9) and showed the wickedness of fornication by classing it with murder, thievery, wicked reasoning, false testimony, and blasphemy. He pointed out that these come from within a man, from his heart, and defile him. (Mt 15:19, 20; Mr 7:21-23) Later, the governing body of the Christian congregation, comprised of the apostles and older men in Jerusalem, wrote to Christians in about 49 C.E., warning them against fornication, and placing it alongside idolatry and the eating of blood.—Ac 15:20, 29; 21:25.

The apostle Paul points out that fornication is one of the works of the flesh, the opposite of the fruitage of the spirit of God, and warns that the practice of fleshly works will prevent an individual from inheriting the Kingdom. (Ga 5:19-21) He counsels that the Christian should deaden his body “as respects fornication.” (Col 3:5) In fact, he warns that it should not even be a topic of conversation among Christians, who should be holy. Similarly, the Israelites were not to mention the names of the pagan gods—not that they would fail to warn their children about these gods, but they would not mention them with any esteem.—Eph 5:3; Ex 23:13.

"Fornicate" has negative connotations, which means that when you use the word, you mean to convey your opinion that people are having sex inappropriately.

For instance, "sex" is a neutral word. If you say that people are having sex, you are not making a judgment about whether you think its good or bad.

It isn't exactly the best way to describe the activities of others. I wouldn't say it is offensive or vulgar. Strange conversations you plan on having with your friends, family and co-workers, Hehe!

" prmeritasex" please use spell check.

in my opinion its better to sey fornicate then to just say sex or another vulgar word. Fornicate actually sounds more educated then just saying sex.
