Everyone is different, so this is a slippery slope... Medicating pain is not addiction. Not being able to stop when the pain is gone is a problem. Taking narcotics for taking narcotics' sake is a problem. Using narcotics for recreational purposes is a problem.

Those with chronic pain can run the risk of addiction, too. This is a problem best discussed with ones doctor.

Signs of drug addiction vary, depending on the drug you're using. You might want to do a Google search for addiction related to the specific narcotics you're using. However, there are some general characteristics of drug addiction:

*Feeling that you need the drug regularly and, in some cases, many times a day
*Making certain that you maintain a supply of the drug
*Failing repeatedly in your attempts to stop using the drug
*Doing things to obtain the drug that you normally wouldn't do, such as stealing
*Feeling that you need the drug to deal with your problems
*Driving or doing other activities that place you and others at risk of physical harm when you're under the influence of the drug

If you're concerned about whether you might be developing an addiction, you should really talk to a professional.

Are you in pain for a genuine reason, like resulting from some sort of accident? Or do you simply take them just because you like the way they make you feel? If you take them because you honestly need them and only take them as the directions say, No your not an addict. But if you take them simply for fun or for no real reason and you feel like you just MUST have them, then Yes, you are an addict

i have been wondering the same thing cause i am on pain killers for some serious back problems.....i don't think i am an addict because i am taking them cause they are needed to live my life (i couldn't function because of the pain without them)....i think if you buy them from people on the street or something and aren't prescribed them, then i would say you have a problem!!!!!!

only if you abuse the pills when you don't have pain. pain narcotics are physically addicting and lower your pain threshhold in the long term. try to only take them when absolutely necessary and in low dosages.
