You're right, people came up with the dogma. But --
Organized religions have actually done a lot of good. Our whole concept of individual liberty -- of the inviolability of the conscience of the individual -- comes ultimately from the Judeo-Christian tradition. Likewise the concept of human rights. Without the Hebrew prophets we would never have had the movements for social justice that we had in the past few hundred years. Abolitionism and the civil rights movement were both religiously inspired and supported by various organized religious bodies. Christians were the first to build free public hospitals. Christian monastics and Muslim scholars preserved the knowledge of the ancient world during the dark ages. As far as the afterlife goes, it may or may not be real (AFAIC, that's a matter for scientific investigation), but it has inspired people to give themselves to hopeless, noble causes.
Organized religion is a mixed bag, pretty much like everything else.

I'll tell you what good its done...
First, it recently knocked two buildings down in NYC that were apparently an eye sore or something.
It has split up Ireland and we all know the drinking that would go on should that country ever be rejoined would be a problem.
It has sent numerous groups off on the mother ship of their choosing.
It demonized those practicing Wicca for the simple reason of controlling all the population as sheep.
It demonizaed women in order to put those dastardly Pagans (like myself) down.
...alright, so I can't argue the point except to say that it has given us some nice tunes...admittedly the words of those hymns are usually messed up, but at least we have the music.

Everything has to be organised. It's true that religions have had killings done by them/for them but that is [mainly] in the past, when the Church had more power.
Religion has united people - just watch any religious meeting, even those gospel group things in America, everyone is together with their eyes closed singing their hearts away. And in normal churches in the UK, everyone is united together.

Well it gives people purpose in life. It should be noted that most people have the freedom to choose religions, and that it only becomes a problem when either somebody or a group of persons are persecuted because of it. I myself do not regularly attend church services, but as long as nobody bothers me they can do what they like.

While I agree that organized religion has given us much bloodshed, I also acknowledge the fact that organized religion was really the first place that science became a learned institution - because only the Church had the money to waste on experiments, and the monks had too much time on their hands of other endevors. Gregory Mendel, father of genetics was a Benedictine Monk... Art also has acheived much thanks to religion.....
The point is, religion is NO LONGER providing anything useful to society, other than dividing mankind.

Oh, let's see, organized religions have consistently fed the poor, taken care of the sick, taken in strangers, defended not only their faith but the faith of others through prayers, war, and sacrifice, and the Christian ones bring the Good News to the world.
You're right, organized religions have done nothing for anyone.

The first public schools were created by Christians, the first public hospitals were created by Christians. Organized religion builds housing all around the world for people who don't have a roof over their head. Organized religion feeds people in countries whose government won't feed them.

Organized religions started many of the schools, and many of the hospitals.
During the American Revolution, many of our armed troops were formed on the grounds of a church, often led by pastors.
That will give you something to research.
