If you live in the USA and are willing to spend an hour and a half, you could do me a HUGE favor and learn about your family tree at the same time.

Get a list of your grandparents, their birth, marriage & death dates and places, maiden names for the grandmothers. If you can do it for your great grandparents, even better. If you don't have all the dates and places for all the people, that is OK.

Then go to

http://www.tedpack.org/genclass1.html

Work through the exercises. They all ask you to look up someone from your list on the free data bases. Where it says to do it for one or two people, do it for all of them. I'd like to know if you find it clear, helpful and well-laid out.

It is for a class I'm going to do at our library on Internet genealogy for beginners.

I'd appreciate feedback; what worked, what didn't, what was clear, what wasn't, what caused you problems. You will probably find some clues to your family tree and you will certainly get an introduction to some of the largest free genealogy sites on the Internet.

Thanks!

Try rootsweb.com. But somebody had to put the information out there for you to get it. Your family tree may not BE on the internet, free or not. There is a fair amount of work involved in putting those together, but it can be fun. Why don't you start one yourself? Ask your parents and other relatives about older generations. Take careful notes of dates and places. Then you can do further research on the internet and add facts as you find them.

You need to start building it yourself. I started building my family tree about 5 years ago and now have about 12,000 names in it. A good free sight is www.familysearch.com
I would urge you to get a good computer program for family trees like Family Tree Maker. It really helps. Also, go online with Ancestry.com or Genealogy.com or Rootsweb.com and use the message boards to locate information. It can be enjoyable and frustrating at the same time. I happened to find an individual on one of the message boards that had a connection to my wife's family. He sent me his information and I added it to mine and increased my tree threefold with that one incident. Good luck.
