My wife drives a Toyota Corolla Sport and we both love it! It's a 4 cylinder but it has plenty of pickup to keep you feeling safe when getting on the highway. It's very safe and dependable. You could find one that's a couple years old for around $12k with low miles. They're VERY good on gas milage and they have a big trunk for when she starts bringing things back and forth to college (or Grandma's house).
I hope this info helps. You have a lucky granddaughter.

A used Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla or Honda Accord or Toyota Camry would be a good choice. The are good, reliable and ecomical cars. If you would spend just a little bit more, you could get a good and used 90's Volvo or Beemer. They are safe and reliable but the mpg might be a bit on the downside. Also, if you would want to buy a new car the VW Jetta or the VW Golf (VW Rabbit as you call it in the States) would be good.

She's very lucky to have grandparents like you.. A used corolla, or a new Yaris, SCion Xa, Xb, or TC would be great. So is a used 4 door Civic. A used Corolla's and Civics is good start as a used, reliable, good safety and mgpg. Total cost of ownership is lowest with the Corolla (get something like a 2002-2003 - so that it's a newer body style.

The new 2007 Honda Fit is an excellent car. It has Front airbags, side airbags and side curtain airbags. It also gets 31city 37 highway mpg, and hey, it's a honda. They never break down. They also come with great stereo's which your grand daughter should like. They start around 13k and you can get a fully loaded Sport model for 16,520. I actually bought one for my self because I have a long commute to work and it gets great fuel milage. I have no complaints about the car aside from it being a little on the slow side.

Oh for crying out loud, enough with the Hondas! Why is it whenever someone needs a car recommendation for someone in there teens the first thing people answer with is Honda Honda Honda. What about a Dodge Caliber, a Chevy Cobalt, HHR, or Aveo. How about a VW New Beetle or Rabbit. A Saturn Vue. A Hyundia Elantra. There are so many good choices for someone that age besides a Honda, Toyota or Scion. Regardless of what people perceive, they are not the best cars in the world.

Get a Honda civic 1998-2003 or VW Jetta 2000-2004 both car are excellent. Plus it would be better if you said how much you want to spend. But those cars are around $7000 to $10000

Get her a newer car if she is a good responsible driver, get her a 2006 honda civic lx 4-door, its very reliable, safe- comes with airbags 2 front and side, gets 35 mpg average, and its very cheap starting prices may vary but usually between 12K-15K depending on options and market price.. i recommend you get one soon since year-end deals on much cheaper because they are trying to make room for the 2007's. Good luck and she is a lucky girl for having such a nice grandmother.

I'd buy a Honda Civic or a Fit, they have excellent crash test ratings, are easy to drive and maneuver into tight spots (good for inexperienced drivers and parking), get good gas mileage, are good to insure, and come with front and side airbags.
They also have a better seating position than a Toyota Corolla (the steering wheel is too far away) so a Civic is more comfortable to drive. They are front-wheel drive and come with traction control, so the car will help get her out of trouble if she gets into any.
In general, I'd go with a compact car that will be easier to drive.
Car and Driver magazine did some comparisons between the popular models and it might help you decide, but any car on the lists would be a good choice - http://www.caranddriver.com/comparisons/11873/2007-toyota-corolla-le-vs-2006-honda-civic-lx-vs-2007-hyundai-elantra-se-vs-2007-mazda-3s-touring-vs-2007-volkswagen-rabbit-vs-2007-nissan-sentra-20s.html
