Cephalexin, which is a first generation cephalosporin (drug family), shares a very similar chemical structure to penicillin, which means that there is a potential for cross-reactivity to occur. In which case, you definitely should let your doctor know, since he's the one who can prescibe a different drug to get around your allergy.

Yes, the incidence of cross sensitivity is less than 3%. My wife is allergic to penicillin and can take cephalexin with no problem.
