It's not lame or impersonal if you know the person LOVES to shop at that particular store or eat at that resutaurant! I love to get gift cards.....as long as they are somewhere I actually like to go. And, to get that out of me, all one has to do is ask. I like gifts, too, but I prefer gift cards so I can pick what I want. I like to shop, and I like to go out to eat.
However, I have gotten 2 gift cards for Starbuck's in the past year and they just sit in my purse. I hate those two! I NEVER go to Starbuck's.
My advice on gift cards is to make sure someone likes to shop or eat there if you are going to get those. Also, I like to accompany any gift card I give with another small gift of some sort, something thoughtful. My mom loves Target so for Mother's Day I got her a Target gift card attached to a box of those Choxie chocolates they have. I don't like just tossing the gift card in a greeting card.

Ever since i found out that half of my old gift cards had expired, I've hated gift cards. I think the best solution is to give and get gifts with the gift receipt. It's like a gift card, but it's MUCH more personal. If the item was purchased on sale then the giver can just leave out the gift card and give the gift. After all ultimately it's the effort and thought and love and time that went into the gift that really matters the most.
Great question Mike!

I only give gift cards if I want to get someone a cd or something like that. It's so hard to know what they have and don't have or will purchase by Christmas. So, I'll get a gift card for HMV or something. But, I usually take the time and find an appropriate gift for everyone.

Well, I normally like a real gift, but I can see the gift card if you have to mail a gift or something. Last year, I had lost a bunch of weight, and I asked people for gift cards so I could have the thrill of shopping for clothes in smaller sizes.

I only give gift cards if I really don't know the person well enough to buy them a gift. BUT, they really aren't THAT bad. There's a lot of times that I would have preferred to receive a gift card or cash instead of a gift, because I could have used it towards something I needed/wanted more. =)

i think gift cards are alittle impersonal too, the person may not like shopping at the place the gift card gives money for....Try giving cash instead if you find gift giving is too time consuming. Good luck!

Actually, not impersonal at all if you know that the recipient loves to get them. I know a lot of people who jump up and down when they get a gift card for their favorite store or coffee place, for example. I love receiving gift cards for my favorite book store.

I do but please let me tell you a new scam people are pulling.
They jot down the numbers on the Gift cards, then wait a few days and call to see if it is activated, then go shopping on line. Beware! And only buy GC's behind the desk or way in the back.
Merry Christmas!

Gift cards are impersonal, but are good for those people that you don't know what to get them, like Dads, grandfathers, etc.

I like to combine gift cards with another gift(s). I like to pick one or two things out that are individualistic, but I also like to add something practical like a gift card because I know they will use and like it!
