how old do pit bulls have to be to clip their ears and tail?

I think their tail needs to be chopped when they are still teeny. Their ears shouldn't be cut once they pass 2 or 3 months. I think its a nice look for certain dogs to have these features. If people think its cruel, that's their opinion. Some vets choose not to do this because they consider it cruel.

Tails are supposed to be docked by 3 days old, ears should be cropped between 8-14 weeks. However, I've never seen a pit with a docked tail, so I don't know why you'd be looking into this. Ears on pits are usually only cropped when people want their dogs to fight, cropping prevents them from getting ripped or bitten off in the melay. There is no need to do either for this breed. It isn't a standard for them (unlike dobies, danes and boxers) in the show ring, especially since you can't show pits, at least in the US. They cannot be registered w/ the AKC. Also cropping can be quite expensive and you want to make sure that you have seen pix of what the vet can do, some do very poor jobs. Some only do show crops (dobies and danes), whereas others do the military and medium crop.

Pit bulls do not have their tails docked and even if they did, it would have to be done at three days of age because after the reach a certain age range, it is considered amputation.

As to cropping their ears, the typical range is from eight (8) weeks to four (4) months. Puppies and dogs who are older than that typically have a hard time getting the ears to stand correctly without labor intensive actions.

While having that done, I would also suggest a spay/neuter to prevent other issues with intact dogs if you intend to get your dogs cropped.

Why do you want to get ears and tails clipped? Clipped Pits are fighting dogs...are you planning on fighting? Pits are beautiful left natural. Besides, I don't think you don't clip a pits tail...dobies, schnauzer, cocker, Rottweilers and a few others are the only ones that most people clip tails.

IS being circumcised when your a baby cruel ? It's not necessary but most of us mothers get our sons done anyway ! MY son won't remember it and your dog won't either. and it is just for looks but it's a personal decision . This person wasn't asking permission to get it done just at what age!

He is right pitts don't get Docked and ears are easily done between 8 to 12 weeks some vets are reluctant to do it after that so if you want it done don't wait much longer.
I had both my boxers done at 13 wks and it did not bother them one bit, they did not itch them or act like they even knew anything was different.

The tails are usually done within days of birth. That is a simple surgery that is relatively easy for the dog.

The ears are a different story. It's a long procedure with a long recovery and healing time. Please reconsider. They are better looking natural anyway.

For the tails, it's ususally done very young, like less than a week old. For the ears, I think 8 weeks or so.

But there is no good reason for doing this and it only brings on a painful situation for the dog that is really not needed.

You shouldn't but if you really want to it has to be done when they are puppies. It's called cropping for the ears and docking for the tail.

NONE! If is inhumane to put any animal through that pain for appearance. Can you imagine how bad it would hurt to have your ears clipped? The pain itself is worth dying for. The healing is also very painful. If you were any kind of an owner, you would not put your puppy that you so call "love" through so much pain.

And the world wonders why pit bulls attack.....
