Urlingford (Ãth na nUrlainn in Irish) is a town in County Kilkenny in the southeastern part of the midlands of Irish midlands. The town lies on the main N8 Dublin-Cork road and is a bus hub, with major operator JJ Kavanagh based there. Situated 125 km from Dublin and 129 km from Cork, Urlingford has long been a resting-point for travellers half way between Ireland's two biggest cities. INLA kidnapper Dessie O'Hare was captured in the town in 1987.

The town of Urlingford is familiar to all who travel the Dublin to Cork main road (N 8). Translating as "The ford on the hurdles", the town which lies just to the Kilkenny side of the Tipperary county and the Munster-Leinster provincial border has been the half-way landmark and rest stop between the two biggest cities in Ireland for centuries. Urlingford has a rising population of over 700 people and this is expect to grow as proposed new housing developments come on stream. Work has already begun on a large scale development to the south of the town.
Although the small River Goul runs through the town, it was as a ford through the surrounding Bog of Allen that Urlingford gained its prominence. Its strategic position has made Urlingford a centre for public transport. Bus Eireann includes the town as a major stop and the national transport operator is joined by a number of other private bus operators from Urlingford itself, (J.J Kavanagh & Sons and Bernard Kavanagh being prominent), in making the prosperous town a national hub of bus transport.
Its position close to the centre of hurling country makes the area one of the first to stage inter-county hurling games, particularly between Kilkenny and their traditional rivals, Tipperary. One match between the counties at the latter end of the 19th century, was played at Fennor just outside Urlingford on the Tipperary side of the border and gave rise to the Tipperary’s long-standing nickname. Apparently the game became fractious and fighting broke out among the players initially and then among the opposing supporters. The Kilkenny contingent being lesser in numbers and on their rivals territory, eventually turned to flee back down Fennor Hill towards Urlingford and were encouraged on their way by ‘gifts’ of rocks and stones from the Tipperary supporters. ‘The Stonethrower’ tag was theirs from that day.
Urlingford town centre lies on either side of the main road and was a drab streetscape until a few years ago, when the local community transformed it into a much more attractive setting. The town now presents a neat scene of busy shops and other businesses. Indeed, "business is the business" of Urlingford! Apart for the bus companies and numerous retail shops, the town employs relatively large numbers in Bergin’s Meat Factory; Agrihealth animal pharmaceuticals; three busy service stations; the Urlingford Arms Hotel and several mid-price restaurants. The development of the twin lead-zinc mines at nearby Lisheen and Galmoy has also provided major employment opportunities for the town and the surrounding area.
The town now has a magnificent new library, which is housed in the old District Courthouse. Plans are afoot for the development of a new town park. A new walking ‘loop-route’ starting at the historic and scenic Mill Road - old church and cemetery area, will be launched later in 2001. So, things are happening, Urlingford is both looking to its past with pride and its future with confidence
