I have really long hair too. I found that washing it everyday dried it out. So now i wash it every second day using shampoo and conditioner. I usually leave the conditioner in for around 5 - 10 mins bofore washing it out. Once a month i use an intensive conditioner (there are lots out there) where i leave the conditioner in for around half an hour. Your hair needs more care the longer you let it grow.

My immediate answer would be, no, it isn't healthy to wash your hair daily, but that really depends on you.
How sensitive is your skin/scalp, how active are you (do you sweat a lot), do you have naturally oily hair...those are a few facts I'd consider before deciding whether or not to wash it daily.
From what I've heard from some of the ladies in my life (different hair types, etc.), many women choose not to wash hair daily, because it'll dry-out. This may or may not be due to the type of shampoo used, though.
That said, wash it daily, and adjust as necessary. If you feel comfortable letting it go, say, every other day, then by all means, do so. However, if you're noticing a smell, or just can't live without washing it, you might want to review your hair care products.

I would wash it every other day, especially in the winter. The dry air will dry out your hair even more. Use the correct shampoo and conditioner too, as in if your hair is dry or colored or oily. Also, the key to growing it long and keeping it looking healthy is getting regular trims. I would recommend once a month. Just get a half inch taken off and it will keep it looking great! Good luck!

It depends on the shampoo. If you have a reason to wash it everyday, because you go swimming or something then you should always use a frequent use shampoo and not condition it each time. But if possible you should try to wash it less frequently, every 2-3 days. And if you want to grow your hair longer get it cut frequently as it will stimulate growth and your hair will look healthy.

I have long hair also (barely tucks into my jeans) and I wash it every other day and soemtimes I go about two and a half days and then wash it in the evening so that I can put a leave in conditioner and then rinse it out in the morning.
Kerstase (by Loreal) works really good.
But once a week try either Cholesterol by Helene it's a thick mayo/oil type for your hair and your hair will absorbe it and your hair will thank you for it.
Also you could pour a cold beer over you hair and that should help too with the shine, it really does work!!!

Washing hair every 2-3 days does not result in 'dirty' hair per se, but actually results in healthy hair. Washing hair every day robs hair of essential oils and tends to be drying on scalp & hair. So skip the daily scrubs & instead rinse hair with water, skipping the 'poo. This will remove any loose dirt & adds needed body.
Wash your hair regularly but no more than three times a week. The daily washing of hair will denude your hair of natural conditioning oils, leaving it brittle and dry. If you have oily hair, use the appropriate ph-balanced shampoo, and do not massage your scalp vigorously, as this will overstimulate the oil glands. If you have a dandruff condition, use a gentle anti-dandruff shampoo on an occasional basis.
Daily brushing is the best.

I used to have really long hair and it was very thick, so when i would skip a day of washing it no one could tell. For me, washing my hair every other day seemed to make it more healthy looking and feeling. Even now with short hair i sometimes skip a day and it cuts down on split ends and makes my hair shine.

It is not healthy to wash it everyday. These people who are saying it is "unhygenic" have it completely wrong. Your hair will be much healthier and shinier if you wash it less frequently. Try every other day if you have really oily hair, but I think it's best to try every 3 days. Sephora sells an oil absorbing powder shampoo that can be used in between washings made by Stila.

No need to wash it everyday--especially if it's long. Washing drys and damages hair--robs it of it's natural oils. You can wash it every other day and no one will know--and if you are lucky, you might can wash it every two days. In fact, hair usually looks much much better the day AFTER washing--not as much friss or flyaway!
People with short hair HAVE to wash everyday b/c the oil build up shows faster--those poor people!

I have long hair (waist length).. Do not wash your hair everyday. The oil comes from your scalp and it can't reach the ends if you wash it daily. That will cause it to be dry and ending up splitting and breaking off. Wash it once a week and apply a leave on conditioner to the ends daily. I braid my every night before I go to bed to prevent tangles. Use a comb on wet hair, it prevents breaking.
