Hinduism was around much longer than budhism. Budhism is viewed as a sect of hinduism in India. Even in Nepal if you ask a buddhist whether he's buddhist or hindu, he will not understand your question. You are looking at things with your predetermined monotheistic perspective like it's either buddha or jesus or whatever. Buddism adopted a lot of things from hinduism essentially it's ascetic part about "moksha" which is referred to as "Nirvana" in buddhism. Indians whether they identify themselves as hindus or buddhists will go pay respects to any religious place of worship even if it is a church or a mosque that is considered holy! Hindus believe that god is everywhere and in all of us too. Your spirituality is for you for it brings you peace. It is not for organising a community. It is evident from the various sects present in hinduism that still identify themselves as basically hindu! Buddha is actually considered an incarnation of vishnu in hinduism.

Buddhism and Hinduism are fertile fields for monotheism. That is, to a Buddhist, simply that there is a God who is all powerful. And to a Hindu, that the other spiritual players are not to be worshipped, but only the almighty God.
