No!

Moses was a descendant of Levi and Jesus a descendant of Juda, both of whom were the sons of the Prophet Jacob.

So they were destant relatives, but directly.

No. Moses was of the tribe of Levi and Jesus is from the tribe of Judah. Jesus was a descendant of King David.

There is no record of a lineage linking Moses to Jesus directly. There may in fact be a linkage due to the law of large numbers - they were separated by many, many generations - but there is no historical, or scriptural text that links the two.

In fact, Jesus and Moses are from two different tribes of Israel. Moses is from the tribe of Levi and Jesus was born into the tribe of Judah. Men born into the tribe of Levi in ancient traditions were assigned to be priests throughout the land. The tribe of Judah has been called the line of Kings because David, Solomon and ultimately Jesus descend from this line.

Did the tribes inter-marry and have children? Of course! So many people born into the house of Judah - Jesus's line - have ancestors from a diverse set of tribes. When you look at the mathematics of lots of generations, it becomes increasingly likely that anyone who had children is an ancestor of someone hundreds of years later. This idea is based on the work of Dr Chang a statistician at Yale. Here is an expalantion:

"The mathematics of our ancestry is exceedingly complex, because the number of our ancestors increases exponentially, not linearly. These numbers are manageable in the first few generations—two parents, four grandparents, eight great-grandparents, sixteen great-great-grandparents—but they quickly spiral out of control. Go back forty generations, or about a thousand years, and each of us theoretically has more than a trillion direct ancestors—a figure that far exceeds the total number of human beings who have ever lived."

The article goes on at some length to explain the realities of migration patterns and intermarriage within small communities. Olsen writes, "The number of ancestors common to all Europeans today increased, until, about a thousand years ago, a peculiar situation prevailed: 20 percent of the adult Europeans alive in 1000 would turn out to be the ancestors of no one living today (that is, they had no children or all their descendants eventually died childless); each of the remaining 80 percent would turn out to be a direct ancestor of every European living today."

So back to Moses and Jesus. The bible records that Moses had children - who presumably had children, and so on and so on. Over the course of hundreds and hundreds of years - approximately 1300 years or so - the descendents of Moses would grow exponentially. At some point it seems mathematically likely that at least one of them married into Jesus's line.

If 80% of people who had children in Europe 1000 years ago are the ancestors of EVERYONE with European ancestry today doesn't it stand to reason that a much smaller population - Israel -over a longer period of time (1300 years) would exhibit the same behavior? I think mathematically, the idea that Jesus descends from Moses seems well withing the realm of reasonable possibility.

In conclusion, the easy answer to your question is NO - there is no record that Jesus is a descendant of Moses. However, mathematical analysis reveals that Jesus could definitely be a descendent of Moses, but that particular link had been lost to the "sands of time".

No, He descended from Aaron, Moses brother, on His mothers side. Jesus united the tribes of Judah (the royal tribe) and Levi (the priestly tribe).

Moses wasn't of that line, being of the tribe of Benjamin. Jesus was of the prophecied line of Judah, later to be called 'Jews', in a sense.

EDit: Sorry, Moses was a Levite. Not from Benjamin.

According to the geneologies in Matthew and in Luke the answer is no. Technically, Moses was of the tribe of Levi whereas Jesus is of the tribe of Judah.

Actually, almost everyone among the Jews is related, one way or the other, to everyone else.

So, it could be said that Jesus was a relative of Moses, David, Abraham and who have you.

Merry Christmas.
