you could all wear khaki's or jeans with matching polo's or something like that... those kind are nice and not cheezy...

Avoid clothing that comes up high on the neck - it cuts you off and you'll look choked. Also avoid bright patterns or shirts with logos as they detract from the faces.
Having everyone wear the same or similar color will give the picture of unity, just make sure the color is complimentary to the background, as well as contrasts. (In other words, don't wear blue on a blue background, black on black, etc. You'll look like a bunch of floating heads.)
An outdoor shot is lovely, but realize you will have to pay for a photographer to come on location if that's what you choose to do.
One of the best photos I have on me with my kids is a Christmas picture we took. We all dressed up nicely (they in white shirts and sweaters, I in a dark blouse and pants). Then I laid down on my stomach with my hands propped up and my kids curled up next to me. The casual pose/formal clothes really suited our family and everyone thought it turned out great!

My sister, a professional photographer suggests that the shot be taken outdoors, and that the family be unified by what they are wearing, for example, everyone in some sort of red sweater or shirt.
By having it outdoors, you can easily avoid such cliches as the Christmas tree in the background, and so on. Also, outdoor scenes are timeless.

Ditto--wear Church clothes that are classic and timeless, not necessarily the sketchy sweater like the sweater lady in that Staple's commercial. lol.

I think you should not fret about what to wear - each of you just wear your Sunday best - don't worry about matching, or anything, and that is the way it works out the best.
