It seems like just about everyone has a method for curing hiccups that has been "passed down for generations". What's yours?

Mine is to light a match and put it out in a cup of water - then drink the match-and-water combination. It works instantly everytime!

Its said in the paper a few weeks ago that digital rectal massage works (a finger up the bum) ...

WHEN a young man walked into the accident and emergency department of Univer- sity Hospital in Jacksonville, Tennessee, complaining of hiccups that had lasted three days, Francis Fesmire, who treated him, had little idea he was about to make medical history.

Yesterday, the American doctor’s innovative solution to the problem — an uncomfortable one that you might not wish to try at home — received the honour it deserves, an Ig Nobel Prize for research that “cannot or should not be reproduced”.

After trying a variety of standard hiccup cures, such as pulling the patient’s tongue and making him gag, Dr Fesmire decided on a different approach.

“Digital rectal massage was then attempted using a slow circumferential motion,” he wrote in his seminal case report, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine. “The frequency of hiccups immediately began to slow, with a termination of all hiccups within 30 seconds.”

Hiccups is really a severe medical condition sometimes, needing treatment in a hospital, but you know, there are a lot of methods for "cure" the hiccups: like the glass of water, drinked in a big swallow, to contain the air inside of lungs, a big scare, and many more, well sometimes works, sometimes no... you could ask to your physician about the use of metoclopramide, that is the best proved treatment for hiccups, of course that need to be prescribed by a physician, so go there please. Be fine.

Take a deep breath, hold it for 10 seconds and then without breathing, take a drink of water. Drink for about 5 seconds straight and then let your breath out.

I get hick ups really bad...they really hurt..
so my boyfriend always hugs me really tight and it distracts me and they go away.

I've tried drinking water, holding breath, holding in the hick ups..nothing works except what he does...

also closing your eyes and thinking of something peiceful..but one thing at a time...
think of a big grass field...than add a horse or some animal you like and then just keep doing that until they go away....
good luck!

An easy trick is to hold your breathe and force yourself to burp... (swallow your breathe into your stomach and then then just let her rip) a couple of times and you will not be walking in circles and patting your head anymore! Usually takes me three seconds to get rid of them but then they are gone for a couple of weeks! Good Riddance!

take a glass of water and put a paper towel over it, then drink the water through the paper towel.

Hold my breath after the very first hiccup--the longer they go on the harder it is to get them to stop.
