The Marine Corps follow standard officer ratings of the Air Force and Army. The lowest grade of Marine officer is Second Lieutenant. They are as follows:

O-1 2nd Lieutenant
O-2 1st Lieutenant
O-3 Captain
O-4 Major
O-5 Lt. Colonel
O-6 Colonel
O-7 Brigadier General
O-8 Major General
O-9 Lieutenant General
O-10 General (4 star)
O-11 General of the Marine Corps (5 star) I don't currently believe anyone holds this rank but could be mistaken.

And lets not forget the ENLISTED ranks:

E-1 Private
E-2 Private First Class
E-3 Lance Corporal
E-4 Corporal
E-5 Sergeant
E-6 Staff Sergeant
E-7 Gunnery Sergeant
E-8 Master Sergeant / Top Sergeant
E-9 Master Gunnery Sergeant / Sergeant Major

And ONE individual holds rank of "Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps"... the personal liaison for all enlisted Marines to the Commandant of the Marine Corps.

Legally and formally ALL officers are atop of the enlisted-men... however, realistically, a 2nd or 1st Lieutenant is below a good Corporal or Sergeant in experience.

Just like the Navy... the NCO's (E-4 and up) are there to train, advise (subtly), and keep young O-1 and O-2's from making stupid mistakes.

Above posts are mostly correct but:
There really is no O-11, the rank stays at O-10 and there are currently 2. The Commandant and Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps. Marines hold no 5 star rank due to being in the Department of the Navy, who holds the Fleet Admiral (O-11) rank, and that is only in a time of war. The last 5 star General or Admiral was in WWII.

As others have pointed out, lieutenant is the lowest of the officer ranks and above the enlisted ranks. However a smart LT isn't going to go around pulling rank on a senior NCO.

There are 2 Lieutenant ranks. 2nd and 1st Lieutenant. They are the first of the commisioned officer ranks. 2nd LT is represented by a single gold bar and is the first, just superior to that is 1st LT represented by a single silver bar.

Sometimes 2nd LT's are called butter bars for their gold bars.
