No, I know it can exaggerate your mood, and it is a stimulant, so perhaps it is increasing the anxiety which was there before.
On the other hand, you could be allergic to something in the drink, or even the alcohol itself. A lot of people are intolerant to it. Try different types of alcohol, and if it happens with all of them, that could be the problem. If it makes you feel like that, the only answer is to avoid it.

Hi there,
I suffer from OCD which is an anxiety disorder. I didn't realize this in the beginning of my disorder but your drinking has a huge effect on anxiety. In short this is how it works. Your body naturally makes serotonin, this is the chemical that controls your mood, appetite and sleep. When you drink the body stops making this chemical because it thinks it has enough; because the alcohol artificially makes it seem like it your brain has serotinin. When you are low in serotonin you can suffer from many things, depression, anxiety, etc. That's why after a night of heavy drinking you feel anxious. It can take days for your body to recover from this. For instance, I drank a ton on Thursday and Friday night and am still feeling effects of this on Wednesday of the following week. So this is why alcohol makes you feel anxious. They say when you have anxiety and you drink it's like pouring fuel on a fire. Don't do it.....fight the anxiety naturally, go for a walk, run, I find hot yoga works amazing. Some of the postures actually increase serotonin in your body. Good luck and try to lay off the booze. I am now an alcoholic(drink at least 3 drinks a day) due to my anxiety disorder, because I did not know if was making me worse, I thought it was helping me. In the short run it helped(for the meantime) but made things worse in the long run. I am in the process of quitting drinking so that I can get my anxiety under control.

Yes, and if you do have an existing anxiety disorder the use of alcohol is discouraged because of this effect. Its kind of a catch 22....the alcohol can temporarily keep the syptoms of anxiety at bay, but be careful, they will be back with a vengenance when the self medicating has worn off.
