I have a 14 week old female chihuahua puppy who very recently developed a very inflamed rash in both of her ears. There is not odor coming from her ears that I can smell. I am planning on taking her in to my veterinarian, but I can't take her in until this weekend because my car broke down. I asked my vet what I can do to relieve my baby's ears until I can take her in and he said to use some aloe vera gel. When I went to get some for her, they had aloe with Lydocaine, and aloe 100% pure. I'm not sure if the Lydocaine will hurt her if she scratches her ear with the stuff on, and then licks her paw after, or if one of my other dogs licks it off cleaning her ears. I don't know which one to buy. Also I was wondering if you had any other suggestions on how I can bring some relief to her. I feel so sorry for her! Should I use Neosporin or Hydrogen Peroxide? Something that will not bring her more discomfort when I put it on her ears!Thank You! Serious Answers Only Please!

Please do NOT use hydrogen peroxide in your dog's ears.....EVER. It will damage her eardrum, sometimes irreversibly.

Call your DVM back and ask your question about which type of aloe vera he meant for you to use...why are you asking people here who don't know your dog, and who have no verifiable medical knowledge or training???

P.S. If you were able to somehow get to the store, how come you couldn't get her to your veterinarian's office to have the problem treated the right way in the first place??? It would save you money, and save her needless discomfort throughout the rest of the week.

I have owned chihuahuas and many cats all my life and this is what I do when I cant get the animal to vet right away, get some peroxide and pour in about 4-5 drops and let it sit in there just a few seconds then turn the head and let it run out, do this 2-3 times in both ears then get some q-tips and swab out all the moisture and gunky stuff, then rub on very little triple antibiotic ointment this will help soothe it. Get the animal to the vet when you can. Do that about 2-3 times a day until you can get her to the vet. This is what my vet told me to do.
Just dont over do it, if the ears look redder more than looking better stop doing it.
Best of luck...

Lydocaine is a numbing agent. I was prescribed Lydocaine for my strep throat a few years ago. I don't know if it would hurt her to lick it, but it would probably make her tongue numb if she got any on her tongue. Pure aloe vera would be the best thing, something without anything else added. Aloe shouldn't hurt the other dogs if they licked it. The Aloe should be the only thing she'd need.

The lidocaine will take the pain away for a short time. I'm sure the level of lidocaine is not high enough to do any damage if she gets a hold of it and gets some on her tongue. However if you can get a hold of a cone collar and put it on her she will look really goofy but it will prevent her from getting to her ears and scratching her anymore. You can also use Benadryl to help her with what ever she is showing an allergic reation to. Call your vet and ask them how much she should get. I have a black lab and I gave her a full tablet but she is about 70lbs. I would only give her a quarter of a tablet if that. It worked wonders for my dog and from working as a vet tech for years I know that it is safe for dogs to take.

A veterinarian is a regular practitioner and the veterinary technician is the equivalent of a nurse, both good careers. yet keep in ideas, if this concerns to you, the veterinarian (regular practitioner) makes so a lot extra funds than the technician.

ring your vet so he/she can decide on the most appripriate.
the aloe Vera with lydocaine contains a topical local anaesthetic so will relieve temporarily any discomfort or soreness of the area.
the 100% aloe Vera wont contain this so will just calm the area of sore skin.
DO NOT USE HYDROGEN PEROXIDE ANYWHERE NEAR THE EAR. THIS CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE EAR CANAL AND SOMETIMES CAN BE UN REVERSIBLE.
If you do use one ensure she doesn't like the cream off.

You should really call your vet and ask - any of the employees there should be able to answer your question and that way, you'll not have to worry that you've been given wrong information. I applaud you for trying to offer your baby as much comfort as possible until she can be seen.
