My Dad had his voice box removed because of a tumor in this throat and now he is using a tablet to write. He is very depressed because he cannot speak. Is there anything that anyone has used or done to be creative in communicating??

You could get some index cards and print up simple repetitive short phrases to be used like a deck of cards. Things we all use regularly. Use dark colorful markers, so they will be easier to find by color. I would write them boldly so a cashier can read them across the checkout lane.

Hello, How are you today?

Thank you for your help.

Yes, Thank You.

No, Thank You.

Can you help me please, I need ____________.

Get the idea, He can carry them in his shirt pocket with his pen and note pad. Hopefully it will eliminate at least the repetitive phrases.

Oh by the way learning sign language is a waste of time considering how few people can read it.

There are talking computers. Many people I have worked with have these with communication problems. And they are portable so he could take it everywhere. It allows them to type and express more clearly how they feel, and gives them a better self esteem because they have a 'voice'. Ask his doctor about this or a speech pathologist or occupational therapist.

I had a friend who had his voice box removed and he had a mechanical device put in his throat and he talked into what looked like a small hand held microphone. His voice was monotone and mechanical sounding but he could talk and he was quite happy with it.

You can always teach an old dog new tricks :-)

How about having him (and the immediate family) learn American Sign Language together?
