Not because I have one, but Goldens are great pets and learn very easy. I have been with mine for 11 years and he has been with me in good times and bad times and he has helped me just by being there and never judging me and I love him for his unconditional love. Most people might not like all the hair, but in a companion, they are unsurpassed.

Go to AKC.org to find the breed standard for them. Then check some of the breeder web sites. Be careful, everyone has the impression that they are wonderful couch potatoes but many of the breeders are breeding the hunting/retrieving skills back into them. Many people end up with dogs that are super smart and hyper active. This is good for the breed, bad if you were expecting a dog that would lay on the floor all day. In either case, Goldens are like any other dog, they need training.
When you start calling breeders, ask about temperament. Ask if the dog has been checked for hips and eyes. Ask if hunt or field champions are in the blood line. You can also know a lot about the quality of the dog by the price. A backyard bred family dog will be in the 300 -500 dollar range. A field bred golden will cost 500 - 1000 dollars. A started field dog with champions in it's bloodline will run you 1000+ dollars. You are doing the right thing by researching before buying.

I have a Border Collie- Golden Retriever mix. She looks like a golden though. She is very smart and follows hand signal commands. She's very loving and calm, until she see's a cat... then she goes nuts. She is also very demanding, insisiting when it is time to play.

Goldens are some of the most docile dogs ever. I have one and he is the BIGGEST baby it the world. You rarely have to discipline them. Of course every dog is different. One of the best places to find info on dog breeds is akc.org. GOOD LUCK!! :)

I work with several and they are the sweetest, most loyal and most playful dogs on the planet. I had one for 10 years and he just recently passed away. His name was Otis and he was the best dog ever. Be sure to buy tennis balls, they LOVE tennis balls.
